Chiesa goes to Serie C2 Wednesday 11 June, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enrico Chiesa is leaving Siena, but won’t retire just yet, as the 37-year-old pens a contract with Serie C2 outfit Figline Valdarno.
The former Serie A Capocannoniere has worn the jerseys of Sampdoria, Cremonese, Parma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Siena in his long career.
He barely featured for Siena over the past two campaigns due to a series of injury problems, but has no intention of hanging up his boots.
“I will play for another two years, then I would like to be a Coach or a club director,” he explained during a special dinner he organised to say goodbye to the Robur fans.
“These five years I spent at Siena have been unforgettable both in a professional and personal sense. I leave many friends here and must always thank the dearly departed President Paolo De Luca for giving me the opportunity to play in this splendid city.”
Patron De Luca took the club from Serie C to the top flight, but sadly died from a long illness less than 24 hours after selling the side to new investors.
Chiesa ends his Serie A career with 138 goals in 380 appearances, not to mention the seven in 17 caps for Italy.
He will turn 38 in December and made his top flight debut in Sampdoria’s 1-0 defeat at Roma on April 16, 1989.
The standout season was 1995-96, when he was Capocannoniere with 22 goals for Sampdoria, but since moving to Fiorentina repeated injuries have blighted his progress.
The veteran will continue his playing days with Serie C2 outfit Figline Valdarno.
