Mourinho: Defeat better for Dutch
Tuesday 17 June, 2008
New Inter boss Jose Mourinho thinks it would be in Holland’s interests to let Romania progress from Group C at the expense of Italy and France.
Having already guaranteed top spot, Holland have the strange position of holding the fate of Italy and France in their hands.
Should the Dutch lose to Romania, the Oranje will go through to the quarter-finals with Victor Piturca’s men and would avoid the prospect of meeting France or Italy in the semi-finals.
“I understand why there is talk about a fix,” Mourinho told Tuttosport.
“To be honest I think that if Holland were to meet France or Italy in the final four the story could be quite different from that of the first phase.
“Holland can’t be held responsible for the fact that the Italians and the French are begging them to help.
“The concentration and emotion for the Dutch players will be different because they have already qualified, while it is the Romanians who are striving to get to the quarter-finals.”
While Mourinho believes Holland will fight as hard as they can, he fears that they may struggle if they fall behind.
“Holland are like a fish in water when they go ahead because they can explore the spaces,” the Special One stressed. “But I want to see what happens if the opposition score first.
“Still I believe that in football everyone wants to win and the players and Coaches are honest.
“Marco Van Basten wants to win just as much as Victor Piturca does. It will just be harder for Van Basten because of the motivation factor.”
