I Am Also A Barcelona Fan – Rafael Nadal
Tennis world number one Rafael Nadal, who has always expressed his adulation for Real Madrid, has now revealed that Barcelona are also his favourite team.
Just days after Spain’s Formula One dual world champion Fernando Alonso admitted that he enjoys watching Barcelona play more than his favourite team, Real Madrid, another of the country’s major sporting icon and Los Blancos supporter, tennis ace Rafael Nadal has also confessed that he has a liking for Madrid’s arch nemesis, Barca.
During a promotional campaign with sports giant Nike, Barcelona-based newspaper Sport managed to catch up with the reigning Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion.
“Yes, I am also a fan of Barca. It’s okay… you can write that and emphasise it, please,” he told the reporter, while signing autographs on the blaugrana jerseys.
“Barcelona have always treated me very well and I feel like one of the family. I want them to know that the feeling is mutual,” the 22 year old added.
Nadal, the nephew of former Barca defender Miguel Angel Nadal, then went on to assure that he remains a fan of Real Madrid, as he spoke about the club’s current crisis.
“I am often regarded as a supporter of Real Madrid and it’s true that I have a lot of affection for the club. But I also have great admiration for Barcelona and just football in general and I follow the league every weekend without missing a game.
“They [Madrid] are not having much luck in the opening stages of the season and the injuries are making things worse.
“And all this is happening while their arch rivals, Barcelona are playing the best football in the world,” affirmed the tennis star.
Finally, Nadal had high words of praise for Ballon d’Or runner-up, Lionel Messi: “He is the best player on the planet right now.
“He is such a normal and humble person and he is always involved with the team. He doesn’t think of himself as the club’s superstar and that is very important,” he concluded.
Nadal had previously stated in a separate promotional outing along with Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas that Los Merengues will beat the Blaugrana 1-0 at the Camp Nou in when the two teams collide in El Clasico next weekend.
