Frustrated Reds forward Babel eyes Ajax return

Liverpool's Ryan Babel has admitted he is keen to join former club Ajax on loan in January and has accused Rafa Benitez of failing to keep promises regarding his first team chances.

Babel, an £11.5m signing from Ajax in the summer of 2007, has become an increasingly peripheral figure at Anfield and after starting the opening day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, the Dutch international has played only 14 minutes as a substitute since.

Benitez only started the 22-year-old in six Premier League games last season and Babel is growing ever more frustrated with his inability to command a regular place, particularly with Holland looking forward to their participation at the World Cup finals next summer.

Now the Amsterdam-born forward is keen to return to his hometown club on loan in January having been disappointed by the chances afforded to him in the early part of the season.

"There have been a lot of things promised, but they haven't been followed up," Babel told De Telegraaf. "I would get to play for more minutes and have more chances, but after the first defeat, I only lost my place.

"I think half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn't be a bad idea. I can add something to the Ajax squad.

"Loaning me out was not an option (in the summer). Now we have agreed to review the situation in January. I see the current situation as a signal that I really have to get playing."

Babel was not initially included in Holland's squad for their upcoming fixtures against Japan and Scotland but was called up by Bert van Marwijk following an injury to Ibrahim Afellay.

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Richard Dunne after the Premier League ratified his ?million move from Manchester City.

Dunne was unable to finalise his switch to Villa Park on transfer deadline day on Tuesday despite the paperwork having been sent off to the Premier League.

However, the delay has proved short-lived and Villa have now confirmed the capture of the Republic of Ireland international.

The former City captain becomes the second defender to link up with Villa this week after James Collins arrived from West Ham United.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill had been keen to improve his options in the centre of defence after losing Martin Laursen to retirement and selling Zat Knight to Bolton.

Dunne will now be in contention to make his Villa debut in the local derby against Birmingham City, live on Sky Sports 1, on Sunday 13th September.

Ultimate professional
City boss Mark Hughes paid tribute to Dunne and admits it would have been difficult for the 29-year-old to stay at the club following the signings of Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott.

Hughes told the club's official website: "Richard has been outstanding for Manchester City. He is the ultimate professional and has served the club magnificently.

"Winning the player of the year award for four consecutive years tells you everything about him. We all wish him well for his future career at Aston Villa.

"It would have been difficult for Dunney to stay given his standing at the club and I understand that. I wasn't going to stand in his way.

"I could have tried to stop him going and said I wanted him as a squad player, but out of respect for what he has done for City I wasn't going to do that."

Zheng Zhi granted work permit for move to Celtic

Zheng Zhi, the captain of China, can now complete his move to Celtic after being granted a work permit.

The 29-year-old midfielder has spent the past couple of seasons with Charlton Athletic but left the London club in June after their relegation to Coca-Cola League One.

Tony Mowbray, the Celtic manager, agreed a deal on Wednesday morning to sign free agent Zheng and he should be available to make his debut against Dundee United on September 12.

“I’m delighted that he may join us. He will significantly add to the squad,” said Mowbray. “Zheng Zhi is a player I have tracked for some time.”
