Steven Taylor has emerged as a surprise Arsenal transfer target as Arsene Wenger looks to strengthen his defence.
The Gunners look set to lose William Gallas this summer and Wenger knows he must find a new long-term partner for Thomas Vermaelen.
Newspaper reports on Sunday suggested that the Arsenal manager is now keeping an eye on Taylor's situation at Newcastle United.
The former England Under-21s captain is about to enter the final year of his contract at St James' Park and it is not clear whether or not he wants to stay.
Magpies boss Chris Hughton is keen to keep Taylor, but the club's new salary structure and his bust-up with team-mate Andy Carroll may persuade the centre-back not to sign a new deal.
If that is the case, cash-strapped Newcastle will look to sell this summer rather than lose one of their most valuable assets for nothing at the end of next season.
Should that happen, Arsenal are likely to compete with Aston Villa for the 24-year-old's signature.
Wenger is also believed to be considering making bids for Gary Cahill of Bolton Wanderers and Everton's Phil Jagielka as part of his plans to strengthen his backline.
