Milan are seriously thinking about hiring Marco Van Basten to replace Leonardo this summer, according to a report in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

It's no secret that Leonardo has a difficult relationship with Milan patron Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi reportedly told a group of senators that Leonardo will leave at the end of the season, partly because he is too headstrong.

Leonardo hit back by saying that they are perhaps 'incompatible' and now looks increasingly likely to return to Rio to be with his family amid interest from Flamengo and the Brazilian national team.

Filippo Galli remains the favourite for the job, but nothing is decided yet and Berlusconi is said to like the prospect of Van Basten sitting on Milan's bench.

The Rossoneri were linked with Van Basten this time last year, although they ended up handing the reins to Leo instead.

La Gazzetta understands that Van Basten has told his friends that he is looking to return to coaching just over a year after he quit Ajax following a poor season in the Eredivisie.

Milan are drawing up a bid for Velez Sarsfield centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 22-year-old who is already a regular for Argentina is widely regarded as the next Walter Samuel.

Milan are ready to pay €12m for the player, but face significant competition from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

However, with a list of suitors as long as their arm, Velez are asking for a figure closer to €20m, something that could end Milan's interest.

Adriano Galliani is said to have backed the move primarily because Otamendi can play in more than one position across the defence and midfield.

The Rossoneri are particularly looking to reinforce their defence this summer after several injuries revealed it to be quite threadbare this season.

They have already agreed to sign Chievo centre-back Mario Yepes on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.
