Chelsea midfielder Jon Obi Mikel is hoping to make up for the heartache of missing the Blues’ trip to Wembley in May by helping the club to another Community Shield success this weekend.

The Nigerian international was absent for Chelsea’s FA Cup Final victory against Portsmouth with a knee injury but is now back to full fitness and eagerly anticipating the new Premier League season which is just over a week away.

“It's a game you always want to win so you can kick off your Premier League campaign feeling strong and confident,” revealed Mikel, in an interview for the matchday programme.

“I also missed The FA Cup Final with my knee injury, so it's great that I now have the chance to play in a big game at Wembley once again.

“It's also nice to be part of something that does so much to help The FA's charity work.”

Of course, Chelsea edged Sunday’s opponents Manchester United to the Premier League title last season and it is expected to be a fiercely competitive campaign at the top again.

But Mikel refuses to reflect too much on the outcome of Sunday’s showcase, given that both teams are still in the final stages of preparations for the season.

“I'm sure both teams will be going head-to-head in the League again this season, but I don't think you can read too much into Sunday's result,” he explained.

“Over the season we will both be coming up against different clubs and different players and winning a title is all about how you perform over nine months, not one afternoon.”

Manchester United have become regular competitors in The FA Community Shield and that is something that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is more than happy with.

The United boss admits the game usually provides a good opportunity to fine tune his players against top quality opponents ahead of the Premier League start a week later.

With last season’s champions Chelsea providing the opposition on Sunday, Ferguson knows it is an early chance to weigh up Carlo Ancelotti’s team as well as his own.

“It’s the final part of our preparations before we start thinking about the team for the opening game,” said Ferguson, speaking in Sunday's match programme.

“We’ve always used it that way. But, of course, we want to win and it would be nice to start the season with some silverware.

“There’s always an excitement about playing at Wembley because it’s a great venue. When you go there you always want to win.”

This year’s Shield is a repeat of last year’s game, which ended 2-2 before Chelsea took the honours after kicks from the penalty mark.

Now, Ferguson knows this will be another good test for the Reds and the sort of standard they will have to be aiming for if they are to win back the Premier League title.

“It’ll be a good test to play against Chelsea – the pair of us have been competing for a good few years now, they’ve taken over from Arsenal in that respect,” he added.

“For years it was always ourselves and Arsenal and now it’s us and Chelsea. They’ve taken over that mantle that Arsenal had and the games always mean a lot now.”

Martin O'Neill has given the biggest indication yet that James Milner is on the verge of moving to Manchester City after leaving him out of Aston Villa's friendly against Valencia.

Milner has been a target for Roberto Mancini all summer and Villa rejected a £20 million bid from City in May, but Villa manager O'Neill said the midfielder could sign for City as soon as the weekend as the clubs near an agreement on a valuation. Reports indicate City midfielder Stephen Ireland could head in the other direction as part of the deal.

Speaking after his side's goalless draw with Valencia, O'Neill appeared resigned to losing the England midfielder, saying he would prefer the deal to be resolved quickly to allow him time to reinvest the funds.

"We didn't play him against Valencia because there could be something happening in terms of the transfer over the weekend or Monday or Tuesday," O'Neill said. "Until that possibly develops I thought it best to leave him out of the Valencia game.

"To my knowledge no fee has been agreed but talks are taking place involving our chief executive and the chairman. I think for everyone's benefit it is probably time to try and get something done. Losing your best players at the club obviously causes you a headache and it is a problem. It happened two years ago with Gareth Barry when it was not resolved. I'm sure that no-one wants to go down that route again. If and when the transfer takes place I will have to speak to the chairman about future transfer dealings.''

O'Neill confirmed left-back Nicky Shorey was on the verge of a move to West Brom.

"Nicky has gone over there for a medical,'' said the Villa boss. "I would have liked to have filled you in to let you know if that had progressed at this minute but I do know he was going for a medical today. I know some fee had been agreed but like anything else until it's all done and dusted these days you never know. It seemed that everything was in place at the time.''
