Manchester City will try again for Kaka if the superstar fails to revive his Real Madrid career after knee surgery.

Brazilian Kaka, 28, is close to full fitness after an operation on his left knee last August.

Since then Bernabeu boss Jose Mourinho has bought German Mesut Ozil from Werder Bremen and the World Cup star has been a big hit. That has already put Chelsea and Kaka’s former boss at AC Milan Carlo Ancelotti on high alert.

But sources in Spain claim City have already made plans to bid for the star if he shows signs of leaving in the summer.

Kaka cost Madrid ￡56million 18 months ago with president Florentino Perez making him his stellar signing. Six months before he signed for the Spanish giants, City failed with an audacious ￡100m bid.

City, with Mark Hughes in charge at the time, were only in the early stages of their Abu Dhabi-backed money-no-object revolution and despite talks with Kaka’s father, the player was not willing to move.

At the time chief executive Garry Cook claimed Milan ‘bottled it’ when they realised City did have the cash to make the deal happen but Kaka was still wary of making a step down.

Now, though, City are heading for the Champions League and could even win the title – and they have financial muscle no other club in the world can match.

City are still looking for a major star and owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak have given Cook the green light to make a massive signing if it is backed by boss Roberto Mancini.

Chelsea are closely watching developments but it is unsure whether owner Roman Abramovich would stump up the ￡45m it would take to sign Kaka.

For City – on the brink of sealing a ￡32m deal for Wolfsburg’s Edin Dzeko – signing Kaka would represent a major statement to Europe’s biggest clubs.
