Doha: AFC has confirmed that Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima will be suspended automatically for Japan’s next match in the AFC Asian Cup with the AFC Disciplinary Committee having the power to decide upon any further sanctions.
Tournament Director Tokuaki Suzuki said AFC had received no written protest from the Japan team after Thursday’s match in which Kawashima was sent off in the 72nd minute.
“No. We have not received any complaint. We can hear verbal protests but cannot take action on it. As it stands now, Kawashima is suspended because of the red card for one match. The AFC Disciplinary Committee will decide on more sanctions after studying the case,” said Suzuki.
“We have already sent a letter to the Japan Football Asssociation that Kawashima is suspended for the next match (against Saudi Arabia).”
Syria’s Nadim Sabagh also misses the next match after being sent off against Japan in stoppage time following two yellow cards.
Suzuki said the performance of referees would not be discussed at the daily media briefing, which is held at the Main Media Centre here.
“I cannot comment about the performance of referees. For AFC, a referee’s decision is final. But we have referee assessors to help the referees assess their performance.”
When asked if Syrian referee Tita Valeriu had been reported to the AFC Disciplinary Committee, Suzuki replied in the negative.
“The Match Commissioner’s report did not refer (to this issue). So it is not in front of the Disciplinary Committee.”
Suzuki also said that the Kuwait Football Association had been fined USD 1000 for allowing an unauthorised person to enter the team dressing room after the Kuwait versus China match.
