Newcastle hit back over Owen jibe

Newcastle have hit back at their former striker Michael Owen after he suggested they were a "poor team" on Twitter.

Owen recently signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United despite making just 11 Premier League appearances last season and, after facing criticism, wrote: "Prefer playing less often in a top team than every game in a poor team. Been there a[nd] didn't enjoy it."

With Owen having only represented Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle prior to his move to Old Trafford in 2009, the comments have been assumed to be in reference to his four-year stay at St James' Park.

Having made the £16 million move from Madrid, Owen scored 26 goals in 58 appearances for the Magpies but was unable to steer the club clear of relegation at the end of the 2008-09 season.

Former Newcastle co-owner Freddy Shepherd said in the Daily Express: "We might have been a poor team, but we made him a rich man. It works out at around £500,000 for every game in a Newcastle shirt. Poor? Well, he wasn't poorer for it. He spent more time ferrying between Cheshire and Tyneside in his £3.5 million helicopter."

Newcastle's managing director, Derek Llambias, added: "Under Kevin Keegan's management he was offered a one-year extension at £140,000 a week, which he did not take. He was already on £133,000. His time here cost £40-odd million, about £1.3 million per goal."

Internacional reject Damiao bid

Tottenham have seen a £10.5 million bid for Brazil striker Leandro Damiao rejected by Internacional.

Harry Redknapp is known to be looking to improve his attacking options this summer, after failing in a number of bids for front-men in the January transfer window and then subsequently seeing his existing options - including Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch - fail to fire in the second half of the season as Spurs missed out on Champions League qualification.

Damiao, 21, made his full debut for the Selecao in a friendly against Scotland at Emirates Stadium earlier this year, but is believed to have attracted interest from clubs including Roma, Benfica and Barcelona.

Internacional have now revealed that Spurs are the first club to make formal contact about the player - although they warned they will have to up their bid significantly if they are to get their man, who is valued at around £17 million.

They will also have to wait until the Brazilian season concludes to wrap up any deal..

"It was the first concrete offer we've had," club president Giovanni Luigi confirmed, when asked about Spurs' approach. "I said I didn't want to sell now, but I think they will come back with another attempt.

"I warned that he'll only leave at the end of the year and for more money."

固然大家會記得佢點樣年少成名攞金球獎
但大家更會記得佢接近三姓家奴既球員生涯
無一間球會對佢有愛, 仲要棲身於母會死敵裡面被人當阿二黎使
提起佢既名字, 大家只會鄙視同嘲笑
