Terry: This may be last chance
March 14, 2012

John Terry believes many of Chelsea's old guard could be facing their "last chance" in the Champions League and warned that failure to qualify for next season's competition could have dire consequences.

Chelsea face an uphill battle to remain in Europe as they look to overturn a 3-1 deficit when they host Napoli on Wednesday night, and are also three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.

It has been speculated that the likes of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba may be moved on in the summer and Terry said: "I think this could be the last chance for this group of players in Europe. We have players who are out of contract in the summer and others who are in negotiation over their current deals.

"I am hoping that many of them stay and many more come in, but the key factor when it comes to new signings is that we need to be playing Champions League football next year.

"We need it financially and we also need it to attract the best players to the club. We will do everything to ensure that happens and I can tell you all that this group of players are determined to make things happen in this game."

Terry, 31, has endured a difficult season, with off-field issues adding to Chelsea's on-field disappointments.

However, Terry has maintained impressive form throughout, with the loyalty of Andre Villas-Boas and Fabio Capello underlining his importance for club and country, and the defender feels he can continue to play at the highest level for some time.

"I think I've got a few years left in me, and I think I've shown with my performances this season that I'm as focused and committed as ever, despite what has been happening off the field," he said. "I'm focused and I know what I have to do for Chelsea. Nothing has changed there.

"I am fortunate and privileged to be the captain of this club. Going into this game against Napoli, you won't find two people who care more about Chelsea than myself and Robbie Di Matteo. We have blue blood in our veins. We represent Chelsea and we have that fiery atmosphere in the dressing room that we hope everyone feeds off."

Gutierrez: Van Persie is not a good person

"I think Van Persie was wrong. There was no need for him to do that - they have won the game, it is finished.

"I can't understand a person like that. I think it is not right. When you feel like that, it is because you are not a good person. I don't care about the football, I'm talking about the person. When you have people who do that, it's not right.

"We are all used to getting kicks - it's a sport of contact - but when you have things like that, it is not right. It is not easy to accept.

"He was the only Arsenal player who reacted like that. The others were saying to him, 'Calm down, calm down'. When you do that, the fans go crazy as well, so it's no good for the atmosphere of the sport.

"It didn't help the game - both sets of fans are having a good evening, they're enjoying the game. He made a big mistake. I say well done to Tim for staying calm. In a second, you can lose your mind, but we have to stay focused.

"I was pleased with Tim. You have to think of the next game and the rest of the season at that moment. It is no good to have a reaction and get a three-game ban or something like that."

Redknapp: England an older man's job
March 15, 2012

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has given another hint that he would accept the England manager's job.

Redknapp, 65, is the favourite to be named the next permanent boss of England in the wake of Fabio Capello's sacking, with Stuart Pearce placed in caretaker charge.

The Spurs coach did recently state he was in two minds over the national role, but on Thursday Redknapp expressed his belief that the next coach should be English and experienced.

He said in the Sun: "It's a great job to be manager of your country. I've got a job to do at Tottenham and I've got to really keep concentrating on my job there, which I do 100%, and see what happens at the end of the year.

"I have never been approached by England or anybody else. I have said all along it needs an English manager.

"We haven't achieved anything with foreign managers. Capello did OK but he had a bad World Cup. We haven't really torn up any trees with them. Why not give it to somebody from here?

"I suppose at the moment there are not a million candidates but there are some young managers who, in the future, I'm sure would be fantastic but are too young.

"It's an older man's job. I think it is not a job for a young guy. I think some guys take it too young. I think Steve McClaren took it too young, maybe Glenn Hoddle.

"I think it's a job for a more experienced manager. I've got to weigh it all up at the end of the year and I've got to do what I feel is right for myself and what I feel is right for my family."
