Terry: This may be last chance
March 14, 2012
John Terry believes many of Chelsea's old guard could be facing their "last chance" in the Champions League and warned that failure to qualify for next season's competition could have dire consequences.
Chelsea face an uphill battle to remain in Europe as they look to overturn a 3-1 deficit when they host Napoli on Wednesday night, and are also three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.
It has been speculated that the likes of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba may be moved on in the summer and Terry said: "I think this could be the last chance for this group of players in Europe. We have players who are out of contract in the summer and others who are in negotiation over their current deals.
"I am hoping that many of them stay and many more come in, but the key factor when it comes to new signings is that we need to be playing Champions League football next year.
"We need it financially and we also need it to attract the best players to the club. We will do everything to ensure that happens and I can tell you all that this group of players are determined to make things happen in this game."
Terry, 31, has endured a difficult season, with off-field issues adding to Chelsea's on-field disappointments.
However, Terry has maintained impressive form throughout, with the loyalty of Andre Villas-Boas and Fabio Capello underlining his importance for club and country, and the defender feels he can continue to play at the highest level for some time.
"I think I've got a few years left in me, and I think I've shown with my performances this season that I'm as focused and committed as ever, despite what has been happening off the field," he said. "I'm focused and I know what I have to do for Chelsea. Nothing has changed there.
"I am fortunate and privileged to be the captain of this club. Going into this game against Napoli, you won't find two people who care more about Chelsea than myself and Robbie Di Matteo. We have blue blood in our veins. We represent Chelsea and we have that fiery atmosphere in the dressing room that we hope everyone feeds off."
