Hamburg report Málaga to UEFA
More problems for Málaga off the pitch with the news that Hamburg have reported them to UEFA for non-payment of Joris Mathijsen’s transfer fee.
Prestigious German newspaper Bild says that Hamburg have not received any of the three payments due for the €2.5m purchase of Dutch international Mathijsen before the start of this season. It is understood that the Bundesliga club’s director of football, Frank Arnesen, tried to claim the money on several occasions but met with little success, even travelling at the end of February to attend the Spain-Venezuela friendly held at Málaga’s La Rosaleda ground.
It is not the first time this season that the Qatari-owned club has had to face allegations of delayed payment, with Villarreal maintaining they had not been paid in full for Santi Cazorla’s transfer and Osasuna issuing a similar claim in respect of full-back Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Monreal’s move.
In view of the Mathijsen situation, if Málaga fail to pay off the debt then UEFA have the power to ban them from European competition next season provided they qualify, which at the moment looks probable as Manuel Pellegrini’s men are seven points clear of Espanyol in seventh place with nine games remaining.
