在某FORUM 睇到. 一個PORTUGAL/ PORTO 既粉..
He (Scolari) 's a bit of a fraud, isn't he? I'm going to rant.
Personally I am happy that his stubbornness and idiocy is exposed on the world stage. I'm not going to lie, I always hated him, due to his obvious terrible relationship with Porto, that he allowed to have a negative influence on his work.
He was a hero around here for almost everyone bar Porto fans, who always had a more cynical view of him. I don't understand how he came out looking like a hero after 2004. To me it was always a case of things turning out good despite of him, not because of him. Finally, people are catching up, and starting to wonder that he might just have been in the right place at the right time.
Things got awry between him and Porto when he made it clear that Vítor Baía wasn't part of his plans. Not even bench. Without an explanation. It came out a few years later, something along the lines of "when I arrived in Portugal I was told he was problematic". After that it was just being stubborn and not wanting to lose face, not being able to turn back on his decision after the first bitter words were exchanged in the press. The best Portuguese goalkeeper of his generation by a mile, voted bested keeper in Europe in 2004. And how lucky can you get? Ricardo turned out a hero with that epic moment against England, when he took out his gloves, saved a penalty, and scored the winning one afterwards. In the end he cost us the final against Greece, and proved throughout the rest of his career that he wasn't a good goalkeeper at all. And one of the best keepers of his time never had a chance to say a proper farewell to the NT.
The worst though, was how he almost ignored, up until the last moment, that he had a CL winning team in the country with a backbone of Portuguese players at his peak. Deco, 2nd in Ballon D'Or that season, benched for Rui Costa that was no longer a starter at Milan. Ricardo Carvalho, at his peak, one of the finest CB's in Europe - if not the best - benched for a, by that time awful, old Fernando Couto. Can it get any more stupid than this? He maintained this throughout a series of poor preparation games (we were hosts so no qualifying) never recognizing that the team was obviously not as strong as it could be. With plenty of time to do so.
Only after losing the opening match against Greece, and under the biggest of pressures that someone in his position could be at the time, did he change the above. We got out of the group stage and the rest is history. Came out a hero, at the back of Mourinho's brilliant team, to which he only turned when it was the only thing that could save him.
I never really rated much the NT position by default, only if someone does something really special, with a personal touch, raising an average or smallish team above expectations. So many underwhelming managers have managed results with great NTs. I don't think we were above expectations with Scolari, but thereabouts. In Euro 2000 we were better than 2004 and WC 2006, and also had a tool at the helm.
All he really did here was motivate and prayer. It was a treat, watching him go to Chelsea, such a different culture, knowing well before hand what would happen. His antics only work in Portuguese. He really has nothing to offer beyond that in terms of technical knowledge, or even common sense.
An even bigger treat though, was watching him become responsible for the biggest catastrophe ever in the biggest footballing nation of the world. As dislikeable as a few Brazilian players may be, all the fun I had came at his cost. |
