Format
The UEFA Cup comprises a wide range of clubs across Europe that have qualified for the competition from a selection of differing routes, to compete in a competition which has different formats at different stages.
New format
A new format for the competition was introduced for the 2004/05 season, replacing the traditional two-match format with fixtures against each other on a home and away basis. The exception to the traditional format was the final, which from 1997/98 was held as a single match, a format that does not change.
Group stage
From 2004/05, two qualifying rounds are staged each over two legs to find the 40 clubs which advance to the group stage. This comprises eight groups of five, with two home and two away matches per club. The winners, runners-up and third-placed clubs from each group advance to the last 32 where they are joined with the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League.[/COLOR] At this point, the traditional two-match format is used with the exception of the single-match final.
Knock-out format
For two-legged matches in the knock-out phase, the club scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more goals away qualifies. If this proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie. the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra-time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.
Single match
For the final, if the scores are level at the end of normal time, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes will be played. If one of the clubs scores more goals than the other during extra time, they shall be declared the winners. But if the result remains deadlocked at the end of the second period of extra time, a penalty shoot-out will determine the winners.
