ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
i. A grade A (or A*) at GCSE is desirable.
ii. You must study Mathematics as one of your AS Level subjects (and please note that Further Mathematics can only be taken as your fourth A2 subject).
COURSE CONTENT
We shall be following the OCR syllabus. The course will be taught, and examined in modules. Three modules are required for an AS award and three more for A2. Our standard course is:
Pure Maths - 2 Modules
Series, complex numbers, further calculus, polynomial equations and matrices.
Statistics – 1 Module
Further statistics, continuous probability distributions, the Normal and Poisson distributions, hypothesis testing.
Mechanics – 1 module
Statics, projectiles, circular motion, collisions, work, energy and power.
Discrete Maths – 2 Modules
Algorithms, graph theory, linear programming, game theory, critical path analysis.
For an AS award you study one Pure, one Discrete and one Statistics module.
N.B. There is no compulsory coursework in this course.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
Module examinations occur in January and in June each year. Each module exam lasts for 1 hour 30 minutes. The pattern for taking the module exams will be:

You will receive your results several weeks after each examination, so you can track your progress through the course. It is possible to add one re-sit per module to the standard pattern.

What sort of people do Further Mathematics?
You need to be good at Mathematics, and, just as importantly, you must enjoy it. In the Upper Sixth, five people are doing Further Mathematics and in the Lower Sixth, the number is six. Most tend to be scientists, but some might do Economics, and we had students who did Art or Latin.
Is it useful for getting into universities?
If you plan to do Mathematics, or a Mathematical science at Cambridge or Oxford, it is very useful. If you plan to do a similar course at a prestigious university, it is a significant help. It will be some help on most mathematics degree courses, but if you take just ‘A’ Level Mathematics (not Further Mathematics), and do well, you will be able to get on a wide variety of good Mathematics degree courses.
It sounds interesting, but I am not sure I can cope with it. What shall I do?
You are wise to be cautious, but almost everyone who takes it really enjoys it. Ask your current Mathematics teacher for their opinion, and try talking to some of our present Further Mathematics students.

Why study A level Maths?
· It is interesting, challenging and rewarding. It teaches you precision and the ability
to think logically.
· It is important in helping you to understand and succeed with other subjects, indeed, it is a compulsory A-level qualification for many degree courses.
· It is widely regarded as a good qualification to have. It could be useful to you throughout your career.
· It is essential if you wish to study Maths at university
What qualities should an A-level Maths student have?
· You must be interested in Mathematics. Do you enjoy algebra and problem solving?
· You must have determination. It is hard, so you will get stuck but you must not give up.
· You must work consistently hard. You have to keep on top of the work on a modular course.
· You must be prepared to ask for help when you need it. Being shy is no excuse!
· You must be organised and responsible about your study. It is your future.
How many people do A-level Maths at Ripon Grammar School?
· There are 43 in the Lower Sixth in three sets.
· About two thirds of our AS students continue to A2 level.

The course is entitled “Advancing Physics”. It has been backed by the Institute of Physics and the Oxford and Cambridge Exam Board (OCR.).
It is a modern, forward-looking flexible course with an emphasis on application and with plenty of opportunity for individually focussed work.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
It is assumed that those embarking on the course will have achieved grade C at GCSE level in either Physics or Science (Dual Award). To study ‘A’ Level Maths is a useful but not essential course requirement.
COURSE CONTENT
The course is divided into 9 chapters in each year, grouped in similar themes. A final chapter reviews the whole course.
AS course
