Parreira: We are favourites
Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says his side will go into the 2006 World Cup as favourites after their impressive Confederations Cup display.
The Samba stars crushed their fierce rivals Argentina in the final of the Confederations Cup on Wednesday night, with a wonderful display of attacking football.
Parreira says that Brazil will be going into the finals in Germany as favourites to defend the trophy they lifted in Japan and Korea in 2002.
"We are going in as an absolute favourite," Parreira said.
"We will have to work on it. We must ensure the role of favourite does not affect us."
Brazil still have to qualify for the finals, unlike Argentina, but need just three points from their final three games to seal their place in Germany.
Parreira was delighted with his Confederations Cup campaign, where he had the chance to test a number of different tactics and players.
"The players have behaved wonderfully. The sprit has been very high even though we have been together for 35 days with only one day off.
"Being the Brazilian national team, that is a long time. We did not have any problems, which is almost surprising.
"The Confederations Cup was a very important competition for Brazil. We fielded our best outfit and clashed with many high-class teams. It provided us with the chance to test many players."
Special praise was reserved for Adriano, who now gives Parreira a real headache with so many gifted attacking players to squeeze into a starting XI.
"It is wonderful for Brazil to have Ronaldo, Adriano, Robinho and so many other good players up front. Giving all of them enough playing time is a good problem the coach has to solve at the moment.
"Everyone was surprised when I handed Adriano his first cap against China a long time ago but I knew he had a special talent.
"He has proven himself as a great player in great moments, like for example in the Copa America and then again in this tournament.
"That is exactly what we want - players that can rise to the occasion. Adriano has already showed he can do that." |
