PREVIEW: OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE - DEPORTIVO (21h00)
Tuesday 23rd August, 2005 -- Deportivo will play today in France with the objective of achieving the ticket to the UEFA cup. The Galicians have a 2-0 advantage in the aggregate score and a draw or even a 0-1 defeat will secure the pass; however, coach Caparrós is alert about the danger in this mission and for that reason he will present an offensive squad in order to score at least one goal.
DEPORTIVO: TRYING TO SCORE A GOAL
The Galicians know that the 2-0 advantage achieved at Riazor is important, but at the same time they recognize that this situation isn't definitive. Caparrós will present a squad with a clear objective: to score at least one goal. A situation that would secure the qualification to the UEFA cup.
Francisco Molina will continue his roll as goalkeeper and the defensive line will suffer one modification: will start in the central position replacing Enrique Romero, Jorge Andrade will be his partner in that function. Manuel Pablo in the right side and Joan Capdevila in the left will complete the formation.
The absence of Sergio will be covered with Lionel Scaloni. The Argentinean midfielder will play as pivote alone with his compatriot Aldo Duscher. Pedro Munitis returns to the left wing and Julián De Guzmán will start in the right. The Canadian player was signed in order to replace Mauro Silva, but his skill convinced Caparrós about his multifunctional abilities.
Finally, The duo Rúben Castro-Diego Tristán will try to accomplish the mission of scoring the desired goals. Momo, Iván Carril and Juan Carlos Valerón will be the offensive alternatives in the bench. Dani Mallo, Héctor and 'Toro' Acuña are also choices that Caparrós has available.
Manuel Pablo talked previous to the confrontation and he said that the squad is ready to face this challenge: "We are very motivated, the squad trust in our chances and we know that the UEFA's ticket is a thing near to us. It will be a huge failure if we can't achieve it. Another positive thing is that the team has worked really well and we are ready to begin la liga."
MARSEILLE: SEARCHING THE MIRACLE
The French club know that the task is difficult, but they will try to achieve the needed result (3-0). The main problem for the coach Jean Fernández is once again the defensive line. Frederic Déhu is injured, Demetrius Ferreira is suspended, Andre Luis isn't in good shape and Lamouchi wasn't inscribed in the competition.. For this reason Beye, Meité, Nakata and Taiwo will conform a very inexperience defensive line.
The confidence that the players have in themselves is another thing to be worried. They are facing several difficulties in the French league as they are fighting in the last positions of the table (only one point achieved in four games played). The 2-3 defeat against Rennes started several critics against the players and the trainer.
Coach Jean Fernández admitted the errors of his team and he's hoping to improve the performance of his men: "The defensive mistakes continues to be our weakest point. The goals received in the match against Rennes shouldn't happen. Also, we need more aggression in our offensive sector. For now we will try to be motivated and face our next challenges."
The combination between Ribery, Niang and Mendoza will be the main hope in order to achieve the goals; however, the mind of the players seems to be in the domestic competition as the experienced defender Lamouchi said: "We have to win against Deportivo, it doesn't matter if we can achieve the qualification, the important thing is to win. The chances of passing to the UEFA cup are minimal, I prefer to be eliminated against the Galicians and play better in the next confrontation against Ajaccio."
