PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO - NEWCASTLE UTD. (INTERTOTO 21h00)
Wednesday 27th July, 2005 -- Deportivo faces today a tough test in Intertoto. Newcastle United visits Riazor in a clear opportunity to see the progress of Caparrós' work. It's expected that the Sevillan trainer will present some modifications in the starting lineup in order to achieve a positive result.
DEPORTIVO: RUBEN AND TRISTAN IN THE LINEUP
The preparations for the game that Caparrós made during Monday and Tuesday left a clear message: Deportivo will present an offensive squad in order to achieve a clear advantage in the aggregate score. The game is attractive also because it's the first opportunity to determine the future of some men. The participation of players like Luque, Duscher or Andrade will confirm their status for the new season.
The defensive line will be the only sector without changes. Francisco Molina will try to prevent the offensive efforts of Shearer. Enrique Romero will continue his work as central defender and Jorge Andrade will join him in the task. Manuel Pablo will occupy the right side and Joan Capdevila the left. It must be noticed that Juanma has been called up for the first time since his incorporation to the club.
A first change appears in midfield: Aldo Duscher will join Sergio in the defensive work. A lot has been said about the preferences of Caparrós, but it seems that the Sevillan coach will trust in the Argentinean player this time. Sergio will also have the mission of supporting the efforts of Pedro Munitis and Albert Luque. The Cantabrian player will replace Víctor on the right wing and the Catalan striker will return to the left.
The victim of this 'new formation' will be Valerón who is called to be on the bench. The lineup will be completed with the combination between Rúben Castro and Diego Tristán upfront. The Canarian striker is living the dream of his life during the last days and now Caparrós will ask him to lead the striking tasks of Deportivo. Tristán will play as the second striker trying to connect midfield with Rúben's work.
Before to the game Juan Carlos Valerón was asked about his possible absence in the starting lineup, the Canarian player said that it was a fact without importance since the main thing for him is Deportivo: "At this point who plays and who doesn't isn't important. Each Intertoto's game has been played with different men and that shouldn't be a problem. All the players likes to participate in every match, but the most important thing here is the squad."
NEWCASTLE: ALL EYES ARE ON SHEARER
Striker Michael Chopra finally travelled to Spain after his condition was approved by the doctors; however, Alan Shearer will be the main responsible for the goals. A golden prize that the Magpies will try to achieve. Shay Given will be the goalkeeper. Steve Carr and Celestine Babayaro will command the defensive line. The announced absences of Jermaine Jenas, Scott Parker and Emre will be covered with Lee Bowyer, Nickie Butt and Robbie Elliott in 4-5-1 formation.
Coach Graeme Souness had positive comments about Deportivo as he said: "We have had them watched on a couple of occasions, and they are a very, very good team. They press their opponents all over the park, and with the likes of Luque and Tristán in their team, they have plenty of threats; also, their season starts at the beginning of August so they are two weeks ahead of us in terms of fitness. I was happy in the last round to win 3-1 away from after just eleven days of training, and then to finish the job off in the home leg, but this is a tougher test for us, there's no doubt about that."
Souness also said that the lineup that he will present is the best one that he's able to use: "I have no choice in terms of picking the team, the players we have available mean the side virtually picks itself, This is a very different pre-season for us. It's not ideal, but that's the situation we find ourselves in and we have to get on with it. I class the Spanish league alongside the English league as one of the best in the world, and we have a big job in front of us. Our aim is to give a good account of ourselves, and keep the tie alive for when we welcome them to St. James' Park next week."
