PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO - NEWCASTLE UTD. (INTERTOTO 21h00)

Wednesday 27th July, 2005 -- Deportivo faces today a tough test in Intertoto. Newcastle United visits Riazor in a clear opportunity to see the progress of Caparrós' work. It's expected that the Sevillan trainer will present some modifications in the starting lineup in order to achieve a positive result.

DEPORTIVO: RUBEN AND TRISTAN IN THE LINEUP
The preparations for the game that Caparrós made during Monday and Tuesday left a clear message: Deportivo will present an offensive squad in order to achieve a clear advantage in the aggregate score. The game is attractive also because it's the first opportunity to determine the future of some men. The participation of players like Luque, Duscher or Andrade will confirm their status for the new season.

The defensive line will be the only sector without changes. Francisco Molina will try to prevent the offensive efforts of Shearer. Enrique Romero will continue his work as central defender and Jorge Andrade will join him in the task. Manuel Pablo will occupy the right side and Joan Capdevila the left. It must be noticed that Juanma has been called up for the first time since his incorporation to the club.

A first change appears in midfield: Aldo Duscher will join Sergio in the defensive work. A lot has been said about the preferences of Caparrós, but it seems that the Sevillan coach will trust in the Argentinean player this time. Sergio will also have the mission of supporting the efforts of Pedro Munitis and Albert Luque. The Cantabrian player will replace Víctor on the right wing and the Catalan striker will return to the left.

The victim of this 'new formation' will be Valerón who is called to be on the bench. The lineup will be completed with the combination between Rúben Castro and Diego Tristán upfront. The Canarian striker is living the dream of his life during the last days and now Caparrós will ask him to lead the striking tasks of Deportivo. Tristán will play as the second striker trying to connect midfield with Rúben's work.

Before to the game Juan Carlos Valerón was asked about his possible absence in the starting lineup, the Canarian player said that it was a fact without importance since the main thing for him is Deportivo: "At this point who plays and who doesn't isn't important. Each Intertoto's game has been played with different men and that shouldn't be a problem. All the players likes to participate in every match, but the most important thing here is the squad."

NEWCASTLE: ALL EYES ARE ON SHEARER
Striker Michael Chopra finally travelled to Spain after his condition was approved by the doctors; however, Alan Shearer will be the main responsible for the goals. A golden prize that the Magpies will try to achieve. Shay Given will be the goalkeeper. Steve Carr and Celestine Babayaro will command the defensive line. The announced absences of Jermaine Jenas, Scott Parker and Emre will be covered with Lee Bowyer, Nickie Butt and Robbie Elliott in 4-5-1 formation.

Coach Graeme Souness had positive comments about Deportivo as he said: "We have had them watched on a couple of occasions, and they are a very, very good team. They press their opponents all over the park, and with the likes of Luque and Tristán in their team, they have plenty of threats; also, their season starts at the beginning of August so they are two weeks ahead of us in terms of fitness. I was happy in the last round to win 3-1 away from after just eleven days of training, and then to finish the job off in the home leg, but this is a tougher test for us, there's no doubt about that."

Souness also said that the lineup that he will present is the best one that he's able to use: "I have no choice in terms of picking the team, the players we have available mean the side virtually picks itself, This is a very different pre-season for us. It's not ideal, but that's the situation we find ourselves in and we have to get on with it. I class the Spanish league alongside the English league as one of the best in the world, and we have a big job in front of us. Our aim is to give a good account of ourselves, and keep the tie alive for when we welcome them to St. James' Park next week."

PROBABLE LINEUPS
Deportivo: Molina - Manuel Pablo, Andrade, Romero, Capdvila - Munitis, Sergio, Duscher, Luque - Rubén, Tristán.
Newcastle: Given - Carr, Babayaro, Boumsong, Taylor - Elliott, N'Zogbia, Butt, Faye, Bowyer - Shearer.
Referee: Serge Gumienny (Belgium)
Kickoff: 21h00 (Riazor)

NEWCASTLE WILL HAVE SEVERAL ABSENCES

Tuesday 26th July, 2005 -- The problems for the English club continues. Midfield's worries are added now to their problems in the striking zone. Jermaine Jenas and their new incorporations Scott Parker and Emre will miss the clash at Riazor.

Yesterday it was reported that coach Graeme Souness has problems in order to find the partner of Alan Shearer for tomorrow's match. The man selected for the job should be Michael Chopra, but the The Geordie striker left St. James' Park in a daze on Saturday evening after being knocked out cold in the 2-0 win over FK ZTS Dubnica. Chopra had a collision with visiting goalkeeper Dusan Pernis just few minutes after he entered to the pitch.

Despite that the doctors recommended at the beginning some rest for Chopra, he's hopeful of making the trip to Spain. The striker was able to take part in light training on Sunday and his condition will be monitored before the final traveling party is named.

And now the problems are worse for Newcastle. Souness confirmed that Jermaine Jenas, Scott Parker and Emre won't be able to travel to Spain as he said yesterday: "Jermaine will not go to Spain, he's a definite non-starter, and there will be no Scott Parker or Emre either." Jenas suffered an injury last Saturday and apparently Scott Parker and Emre aren't ready to debut with the Magpies.

One of the players that commented about the confrontation with Deportivo was Celestine Babayaro. The Nigerian full-back said yesterday that they already know the difficulty of this clash: "Deportivo will be far better technically that Dubnica were over the two previous legs. We know it will be tougher, but we have to be prepared for that. I've not played against Deportivo before, but I have experience of playing against Spanish sides and they are very good technically. They pass the ball well, and make you work hard. This competition is vital for us if we want to get into the UEFA Cup, and I'm sure we will be ready for them by the time the game comes around."

REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 2 - NEWCASTLE UTD. 1 (INTERTOTO 21h00)

Thursday 28th July, 2005 -- Deportivo played a wonderful match at the Riazor. However, the final result shouldn't be a total satisfaction. The Galicians clearly dominated the action, and Rúben Castro and Jorge Andrade scored the goals for the victory. Now the Galicians will travel to England with a slim advantage in their pocket.

BEFORE THE MATCH
There was speculation that coach Caparrós was thinking of an offensive 4-4-2 formation in order to face this tough challenge. In the end, rumours were confirmed and Valerón started on the bench leaving his place to Rúben Castro who partnered with Tristán in the striking zone. Duscher also started the game taking the place of Scaloni. Meanwhile, Alan Shearer began as the only striker for Newcastle since Michael Chopra was relegated to the bench.

FIRST HALF
The Galician squad started the match in an offensive frame of mind. The first opportunity came from a Munitis cross, but defender Boumsong cleared the danger. Deportivo’s efforts were rewarded early on when Rúben Castro scored the first goal of the match after receiving Munitis’ low cross from the right wing. The goal increased Newcastle's anxiety and they suffered several attacks from Deportivo during the rest of the first half.

Shots from Sergio and Munitis caused some worries to the visitors, but Shay Given controlled the situation. Rúben Castro continued to impress with his presence on the field, he was very active during the first half. An example of this was a headed ball that caused some trouble, but the Magpies' goalkeeper was in a good position to contain the ball.

The first 45 minutes ended in the same way as they started: Deportivo attacking on any possible occasion. Tristán had a clear chance to score, but the assistant disallowed the action for being in an offside position. Pedro Munitis had another opportunity when his shot went near the post and Capdevila repeated the act a couple of minutes later just to end the first half.

SECOND HALF
The second half started in a different direction for Deportivo. Lee Bowyer scored the equalizer from a corner-kick. It was the 47th minute when the English player sent a powerful shot from 15 yards. Caparrós reacted immediately and he introduced Valerón in order to replace Tristán. The Sevillan striker wasn't at his best tonight and Caparrós preferred to test the duo of Valerón-Rúben.

But the expected reaction came from a defender. Jorge Andrade picked up the ball in his own half to begin an incredible run into Newcastle's area. When a space opened up for him he sent an accurate drive past Given into the bottom corner of the net. It's the Portuguese player’s second goal wearing the Deportivo shirt. Caparrós continued with his tactics and sent on Scaloni to replace Luque. With this change Munitis passed to the right wing and the Argentine player took the left.

Deportivo continued with their offensive efforts and Rúben Castro was close to increasing the advantage with a scissor kick that didn't cause Given any trouble. Newcastle's coach Souness sent Chopra on the field in order to bring the game level, but it was Depor who continued to dominate the game. Rúben Castro had another chance to score but his dangerous shot was contained by Given.

The pressure over Newcastle continued in the final minutes with free-kicks from Sergio and Víctor, but they didn't take advantage of the situation. Rúben Castro confirmed his candidature to be the man of the match when he almost scored again. Jorge Andrade had the last chance to score with a shot from long distance, but the score didn't change.

AFTER THE MATCH
The narrow win will maintain the suspense until next Wednesday. Deportivo was the better team, but the 2-1 score will demand a cautious performance at St. James’ Park. Newcastle only need a 1-0 result in order to advance. In the other semifinal, Lazio drew 1-1 with Olympique Marseille playing in Rome.
