Winter windfall for Norway's finest

With a new TV deal having added as much as an extra €1m to every top division club's budget for the 2006 season, transfers are likely to be coming thick and fast before the domestic deadline on 31 March.

Huge deal
TV company TV2 and telecommunications company Telenor have paid €125m for the TV and internet rights to Norwegian football - a deal which includes women's football and internationals along with the top two domestic leagues. "This deal gives clubs increased spending power, but we also hope that it will add to the competition among the clubs," said Viking FK director Erik Forgaard.

Major moves
Some clubs have already spent big, notably Lillestrøm SK, who bough Odd Grenland's Canadian forward Olivier Occean for a reported fee of about €1m, while Viking spent €900,000 on securing the services of Rosenborg BK forward Alexander Ødegaard.

Tromsø trawl
Rosenborg have been busy, signing two foreign players from Tromsø IL; Canadian goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld and Tunisian right-winger Karim Essediri. Neither will be are eligible for the UEFA Cup ties against FC Zenit St. Petersburg in February, since both have played already in the competition for Tromsø this season.

Stavrum post
Elsewhere, Molde FK have hired 33-year-old former Helsingborgs IF, Besiktas JK and Aberdeen FC striker Arild Stavrum as their new head coach. A Molde player as late as 2004, he succeeds Bosse Johansson as coach. Molde won the Norwegian Cup last year but needed a play-off win against Moss FK to stay in the Eliteserien.

Bjuder 35 miljoner

Danske landslagsmittfältaren Thomas Gravesen kan snart vara tillbaka i den engelska Premier league-fotbollen. Enligt Ekstra Bladet bjuder Manchester United 35 miljoner kronor för att få loss dansken från Real Madrid.
United ser Gravesen som en lämplig ersättare för Roy Keane.
  Enligt Ekstra Bladet kräver dock Madrid tio miljoner till.
  – Det är Madrid som har bollen. Det är de och inte jag som får ta beslut. De måste bestämma sig en gång för alla i fall de vill ha mig eller inte, säger Gravesen.
  Han kom till Real Madrid från Everton i januari förra året.

Liverpool ser ut att värva den danske backtalangen Daniel Agger från Bröndby. Enligt BBC är avtalet så gott som klart, och laget kommer troligen att betala 5,8 miljoner pund, cirka 79 miljoner kronor, för 21-åringen.
Bara en medicinsk undersökning återstår innan övergången ska vara ett faktum, enligt BBC.
  – Daniel är en spelare som vi har följt under en lång tid. Vi pratade först med Bröndby om honom när vi var i Monaco för Super Cup-finalen, men då var han inte till salu, säger Liverpools manager Rafael Benitez till tv-kanalen.
  Övergången skulle bli den dyraste någonsin mellan en dansk och en utländsk klubb.
  Benitez har tidigare sagt att försvaret behöver förstärkas, och har nyligen värvat den holländske backen Jan Kronkamp från Villareal.

Agger agrees to Anfield switch

Liverpool FC have agreed a deal to sign Danish international defender Daniel Agger from Brøndby IF for a fee reportedly in the region of €8.4m.

Champions League ineligibility
The 21-year-old centre-back, who has four international caps, had a medical with the UEFA Champions League holders on Wednesday afternoon after the two clubs settled on a fee. Agger is, however, ineligibile for the knockout stage of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League campaign having represented Brøndby in the competition's qualifying rounds.

'Clever defender'
"Daniel is a player we have been following for a long time," said Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez. "We scouted him but then he picked up an injury. When he returned to fitness we watched his first game back and we knew he was at the level we require, even though he played only 25 minutes. I think he is a very clever defender. His positional sense is very good, he reads the game well. Of course, there are areas he needs to improve, but he is young and we will help him. He will be an option for the first team within a short space of time."

Memorable debut season
Agger made his debut for Brøndby in 2004/05 and enjoyed a memorable first season, appearing 26 times in the league as the club claimed the title and then completed a domestic double with victory against FC Midtjylland in the Danish Cup final. He played all four games at the start of this campaign as the Scandinavian side lost to AFC Ajax in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round having earlier beaten FC Dinamo Tbilisi, before suffering a knee injury in training in early September which sidelined him for three months. Agger returned for Brøndby's decisive UEFA Cup Group B tie against US Città di Palermo on 15 December, but his presence was not enough to keep his team in the tournament.

Thomas Gravesen may end up leaving Real Madrid in the transfer window - but reports of a Manchester United bid are wide of the mark.

The 29-year-old former Everton midfielder has been eased out of the first-team picture at the Bernabeu this season, raising speculation of a return to the Premiership just 12 months after he quit Goodison Park.

Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be in the market for a central midfielder and has already confirmed he has no interest in recruiting Germany skipper Michael Ballack.

But, after an outlay of ?2million on defensive duo Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, it was thought Ferguson would wait until the summer before bolstering his midfield ranks.

Yet the potential availability of Gravesen - who did not even make the bench for last weekend's encounter with Villarreal despite a host of injuries and suspensions in the Real camp - is sure to have alerted Ferguson, and the presence of the Dane's agent John Sivebaek in Madrid this afternoon has only heightened speculation.

But United officials have rejected talk of a bid and Sivebaek insists his arrival in Spain was purely connected with a deal which has seen Morten Skoubo move from Bronby to Real Sociedad. And the former Manchester United player claims he only moved onto Madrid as an afterthought.

"I was here anyway so I thought I would meet up with Thomas and go to watch Real Madrid's game against Athletic Bilbao tomorrow," said Sivebaek.

"The situation regarding Thomas has not changed at all. He has not played as many matches as he expected over the last few months and at 29 he just wants to play.

"If he can't do it in Madrid he might have to find another place to play but that situation is no different to last week.

"There is certainly no transfer imminent and if Manchester United have made a bid, I know nothing about it."

Sivebaek is hoping to arrange a meeting with Madrid officials over the next few days but with a recall looking less likely by the week, it does appear Gravesen's days in Spain are numbered.

However Real Madrid coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro claims he would be surprised if reports that Gravesen wants to return to the Premiership are true.

"I am surprised by the things that are written in the press," said Lopez Caro.

"I have not noticed anything, if I had I would have spoken to him.

"I only have praise for Gravesen, he is an excellent professional and a fantastic person. However, if anyone is not happy they can leave.

"Whoever doesn't want to help this team, they shouldn't lie to themselves or to the club or to those that are working."

The versatile 24-year-old will join the Bundesliga strugglers subject to a medical and the rubber-stamping of personal terms. "We want him to sign a contract until summer 2008 with an option to stay even longer," said football director Martin Bader.
