Helstad's the man for Brann

The Norwegian league season resumes on Sunday after a brief FIFA World Cup break with SK Brann, Lillestrøm SK and Rosenborg BK battling for pole position.
Title dream
After eleven rounds, Brann are four points ahead of Lillestrøm and ten points ahead of Rosenborg, but the Bergen side have often let things slip in the autumn part of the campaign. Supporters are nonetheless hopeful they can seize the title for the first time since 1963. Odd Grenland and Sandefjord Fotball are level with Rosenborg but are not seen as realistic challengers.
Wave of optimism
Coach Mons Ivar Mjelde's main task is to keep Brann's feet on the ground. The wave of optimism sweeping Bergen is immense and the signing of striker Thorstein Helstad from Rosenborg this week has only made Brann fans feel more positive. Helstad was a star at Brann before joining FK Austria Wien in 2002, and Mjelde hopes his return will bring goals - and gold medals - to Bergen.
Helstad returns
"Thorstein is a proven goalscorer, and is on the fringe of the national side," said Mjelde, who led his team to a 0-0 friendly draw against Swedish side IFK Göteborg in a recent mid-season friendly. "There is no doubt that he is a valuable addition to our squad. He will bring increased competition for places up front." Helstad's arrival may also make a difference in Brann's UEFA Cup campaign, which will start in Northern Ireland on 13 July with the first leg of their first qualifying round tie against Glentoran FC.
Lillestrøm test
Meanwhile, Lillestrøm are adamant their UEFA Intertoto Cup campaign, which starts with the home leg of their tie against Iceland's Keflavík this weekend, will not distract them from domestic concerns. "We don't see our European games as distractions, more as a chance for the players to get the feel for what level is required to challenge for international honours," said coach Uwe Rösler.
Rosenborg hopeful
They may be a long way off the pace, but with both of their title rivals occupied in Europe, Rosenborg will be redoubling their efforts to seize a place in the 2007/08 European competitions. "The ten-point gap between us and Brann is a lot, but we don't see any reason to give up on gold just yet," said coach Per-Mathias Høgmo. "The league isn't even at the half-way stage yet."
