Bowyer linked with Charlton move  
Charlton are poised to make a £1.5m move for Newcastle's Lee Bowyer, according to the Sun newspaper.
Bowyer, 28, started his career with the Addicks after joining as a trainee.
The midfielder left the club for Leeds for 2.8m in 1996 but is seen by Charlton boss Alan Curbishley as a player to add steel to his side.
But BBC Sport understands that no formal approach has been made to the player, who turned down a move to Birmingham earlier in the summer.
Newcastle had accepted a bid for the London-born player but Bowyer turned it down as he feared for his physical safety.
Bowyer is currently in pre-season training with Newcastle as they prepare for the new Premiership season.
But his future in the north east has been in doubt since his on-the-field bust-up with team-mate Kieron Dyer during a match last season.

Viana ready to return to Magpies
Hugo Viana will return to pre-season training with Newcastle next week after Porto, Benfica and Sporting Libson dropped out of the race to sign him.
The 22-year-old Viana, an £8.5m signing from Sporting during the summer of 2002, spent last season on loan with the Uefa Cup finalists.
Viana told the Newcastle Journal: "I've accepted I'll return to Newcastle on Monday and I'm very relaxed.
"I'm contracted to the club for another three years and that's not a problem."
Viana was signed by former Newcastle former boss Sir Bobby Robson, but the Portuguese midfielder struggled in the Premiership.
However, with the departure of Laurent Robert to Portsmouth, Viana's return will bolster manager Graeme Souness' options in midfield as Newcastle prepare for the Intertoto Cup.
"Everybody knows United have tried to transfer me this summer but I do not expect the club to sell me for next to nothing," Viana added.
"The chairman has done everything in his power to make things happen, but it is all quiet.
"Now I am only thinking about the Intertoto Cup and my aim is to make the first squad.
"I always said I was proud to wear the black-and-white stripes and that has never changed. This is a second chance for me.
"I played for Portugal's Under-21s last month so I have stayed fit and healthy over the summer.
"If the manager still wants to sell me then other clubs can have a look at what I can offer."
