Baros Agrees Terms With Schalke

Milan Baros is on the verge of a move to the Bundesliga after agreeing personal terms with Schalke 04 on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Czech international was left out of recent Champions' League qualifiers by coach Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez in a move seen by many as a means of keeping the player eligible for the competition and thereby increasing his market value.

Schalke, Champions League competitors in the coming season, are keen to sign the striker, but have yet to agree a transfer fee with the Premiership club. However, progress has been made with the player and his representative. On Saturday, Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick told German news agency SID: "We’ve agreed things with Baros and his agent. He wants to come to us. We’ll make a move towards agreeing a transfer with Liverpool next week."

Liverpool are believed to be holding out for a fee of €7 million, but Schalke would seem unlikely to offer much more than €5 million. Yesterday, the Gelsenkirchen club appeared to pull-out of contention for the striker's signature, citing the asking price as the prohibitive factor. Rangnick explained: "We have time and don’t need to acceed to Liverpool’s demands straight away."

Baros was one of the outstanding players in last summer's European Championship finals, but could only manage nine goals in the Premiership last season.

The Czech forward Baros, 23, had appeared keen to stay at Liverpool, but boss Rafael Benitez has not played him in the Champions League qualifiers.

"We've agreed things with Baros and his agent," Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick told German sports agency SID.

"He wants to come to us. We'll make a move towards agreeing a transfer with Liverpool next week," added Rangnick.

A transfer fee could yet prove a stumbling block in the transfer with Liverpool holding out for £7m for the Czech striker.

On Friday Schalke had suggested they had ended their interest in Baros because he would cost too much money.

"We have time and don't need to acceed to Liverpool's demands straight away," Rangnick said on Saturday.

Aston Villa have been tracking the striker who has also been linked with moves to Lyon, Valencia and West Ham.

Peter Crouch's £7m arrival from Southampton pushed Baros down the pecking order, with Fernando Morientes, Djibril Cisse and Antony Le Tallec his other rivals for a first-team place.

Last season Baros, who cost Liverpool £3.5m, managed to score just nine Premiership goals.
