Mourinho : The result was "not fair"
Jose Mourinho admitted Chelsea's dramatic 1-0 win over newly-promoted Wigan was "not fair".
"Wigan did not deserve to lose the game," he said after Hernan Crespo's injury-time goal gave his side victory.
"You couldn't tell which team were the Premiership champions and which were the Championship winners last season.
"Crespo's goal was unbelievable and it was important for him on his return to the club. He's a hero because we didn't deserve three points."
While Mourinho was full of praise for Wigan's display, he had harsh words for his own players.
"I feel sorry for Wigan because with their commitment, spirit and organisation, they didn't deserve to lose," he said.
"We didn't play well. We defended very well. All our defenders were brilliant in difficult circumstances because we kept losing the ball in midfield and attack.
"I always accept it when an individual makes a big mistake but I can't accept it when you don't play as a team, when not everyone respects the tactical organisation."
Mourinho brought Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips on at half-time to replace Arjen Robben and Eidur Gudjohnsen and was pleased with the improvement.
"In the first half we were too slow and the players didn't look motivated and I told them at half-time," he said.
"If you don't perform you are probably out of the team, I will keep saying it.
"In the second half we improved a lot.
"Normally the wake-up call is when you lose. Today we had a wake-up call without losing any points." |
