The Asian Football Confederation's 2007 Asian Cup finals will be held in August 2007. For the first time in its history, the competition will be co-hosted by four nations – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
The Asian Cup has been held once every four years from 1956 onwards, with the last tournament in China in 2004. However, the timing meant that the Summer Olympic Games and the European Football Championship are also held in the same year as the Asian Cup, making the sporting calendar somewhat crowded. The AFC have thus decided to change the traditional dates, and will be holding the next tournament in 2007, and every four years henceforth from that date.
In June 2005, the Asian Football Confederation warned Thailand that it needed to improve its facilities before 2007, otherwise it would be dropped, possibly being replaced with Singapore. However, on August 12, the AFC confirmed that Thailand will be a co-host of the 2007 Asian Cup.
Qualification
For the first time, the defending champions (who happen to be Japan) will not earn an automatic berth in the finals and will have to compete in the qualification tournament. 16 teams (including host nations) will qualify for the final tournament.
Indonesia qualified automatically as co-host.
Malaysia qualified automatically as co-host.
Thailand qualified automatically as co-host.
Vietnam qualified automatically as co-host.
Preliminary Qualifying Competition
In November 2005, Bangladesh and Pakistan will play off in a home and away series (with Bangladesh hosting the first leg), to determine which team progresses to the final qualifying round.
Final Qualifying Round
Australia, Bahrain, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen will join the winner of the Bangladesh/Pakistan playoff in the final qualifying round. These 24 teams will be split into six groups of four, playing in a home and away format. The top two of each group will progress to the finals. The draw for this qualifying round will be made on January 4, 2006, with matches starting from February 28, 2006. |
