Newcastle chief in Owen ultimatum
Newcastle have given England striker Michael Owen, 25, until the end of Thursday to decide if he wants to join.
The Magpies agreed a club record fee of around 17m with Real Madrid for the England star on Wednesday but Owen is known to prefer a return to Liverpool.
"There is not much more we can do. We are waiting to hear from Owen and his adviser," Shepherd explained.
"But it has to happen today or it's not going to happen at all, and we will be speaking to Michael's people."
BBC Sport understands Liverpool are not willing to pay more than the 8m Real splashed out to land Owen last summer.
They are expected to reveal their hand after Friday's Super Cup game with CSKA Moscow on Friday but the player would have to take a pay cut to persuade Liverpool to do business.
Owen said on Wednesday that if he could not move back to Anfield, he would consider a loan switch to St James' Park
But Newcastle manager Graeme Souness is only interested in a permanent deal, saying: "The loan is not an option, not a chance.
"Not when we've made a whacking great offer for him that's been accepted."
And Shepherd added: "Real Madrid will not allow Owen to go out on loan but that is something between them and the player but I am sure that a compromise can be reached."

話紐記o係明知奧雲唔肯黎既情況下
都出18m Bid既原因係主席想挽回球迷信心
因為紐記接連買唔到Anelka,Luque等big name signing

Emiliano Butragueno has insisted that everyone at Real Madrid would be delighted if Michael Owen remained at the club.

Owen looks increasingly likely to leave the club, with Newcastle still hoping to loan the striker and Liverpool likely to come in for their former icon.

However, Real's Butragueno would not be unhappy to see the out-of-sorts marksman stay at the Bernabeu.

"Well I want to say that Michael is a great professional and a great human being," said Butragueno.

"We are very happy with him. His behaviour over the past year has been fantastic.

"He was on the bench for many matches but his performances were very high.

"As for his future we will have to wait. We don't know exactly what can happen in the coming days. We'll see.

"There are several English teams that also have an interest but we will wait and see what happens.

"He's a role model and a fantastic professional, but life has its own circumstances and sometimes you have to make decisions.

"Anyway we have the league starting this weekend and the 31st is the last possible day for transfers."

如果紐記到轉會市場關左都連一個攻擊球員買唔到既話,
我唔敢想像紐記到聖誕時既排名同入球數字有幾低
