Jenas targets Europe

Jermaine Jenas is trying to downplay talk that Tottenham Hotspur can qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Spurs have made a bright start to the Premiership season and it has heightened expectations that Martin Jol can bring European football back to White Hart Lane.

But such has been the impressive nature of Spurs' results in the opening quarter of the season that there have been suggestions the club can finish in the top four.

England international Jenas acknowledges that a European spot is the club's target but refused to get carried away by the mention of playing in the Champions League.

"We want to get into Europe definitely," Jenas told Sky Sports News. "We have to continue to win and to develop and the manager has made it clear it is not only the team that has to develop but we have to develop as individuals as well.

"The aim is to get into Europe. People keeping talking about Champions League this and Champions League that.

"It is a long season and we have only played nine games. It's going to be difficult and we are going to have injuries but we are lucky that we have got a big squad.

"I can't say what will happen down the line. I can only say about the game on Saturday and we are going to be fighting and trying to win."

Spurs entertain Arsenal on Saturday and Jenas concedes a win against their North London rivals will fuel the belief that the club can qualify for Europe.

He continued: "The more games you win, the more belief you get, especially against the bigger clubs.

"If we can come away from those games with victories it is only going to fill you with confidence."

Jenas has quickly settled into the Spurs side since his summer switch from Newcastle United but feels there is still plenty of room for improvement.

He added: "I give myself the most criticism. If I thought I played well, there is always something I need to do better."
