Newcastle target Diop
Skysports.com understand Newcastle United are lining up a move for Fulham star Papa Bouba Diop.
The Magpies are looking at options to strengthen their squad when the transfer window reopens and are believed to have targeted a move for Diop.
Diop has quickly established himself as one of the best players in The Premiership and he has carried his fine form from last season into this campaign.
Magpies boss Graeme Souness is believed to be a big fan of Diop and sees the powerful midfielder as a key addition to his squad, as he aims to win a place in Europe this season.
Diop's performances for Fulham have caught the attention of a host of clubs, with Chris Coleman aware the Senegal ace is a target for several sides.
The player's agent Willie McKay insists that despite the speculation, nothing can be done until an offer is made to Fulham and that the West London club are still hoping to tie him down to a new long-term deal.
"I am aware of the speculation of other clubs looking at Papa, but until someone makes an official bid to Fulham, obviously nothing can be done," McKay told skysports.com.
"Papa's performances have been outstanding since he has been at Fulham and I am not surprised there is interest.
"I have spoken to Lee Hoos (Fulham chief executive) and they are still looking to give him a new contract and we will wait and see what happens."

傳聞2: Makoun
Makoun linked with United
Jean Makoun is the latest defensive midfielder to be linked with a move to Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson's declaration that he wants to strengthen his squad in the New Year will spark fresh speculation regarding the identity of his chief targets, but much could depend on whether Lille progress from United's UEFA Champions League group.
Ferguson admits any team with aspirations of winning the European Cup will not want to lose their key players so Bayern Munich's Michael Ballack is highly unlikely to quit the Bundesliga champions before his contract expires next summer.
St Etienne's Didier Zokora and Deportivo La Coruna star Aldo Duscher are other names on the United manager's short-list but Makoun impressed against The Red Devils recently.
The Cameroon international has been watched by United spies since the goalless draw with Villarreal at Stade de France but Lille will resist any offers for the 22-year-old.
The African has only recently signed a contract extension that ties him to Les Dogues until 2010, and even a sizeable offer would not tempt his club to sell before the end of the season.
Reports from Spain have indicated that Duscher, meanwhile, is an €8 million (5.4 million) target for Ferguson although Depor want at least €12 million (8.1 million) for the Argentina international.
Newcastle United are also in the frame for the tough-tackling South American.
