Bayern Munich are now fearful that Michael Ballack will leave the club.
Ballack's protracted contract saga is due to come to a conclusion in the coming weeks as he nears a decision on whether to stay at the Allianz Arena.
The Germany international is out of contract at the end of the season and has been offered a four-year deal to remain in Bavaria.
He has also been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United, while some reports have suggested Real Madrid have already struck a deal with the midfielder.
German champions Bayern had previously been confident that they could persuade Ballack to stay at the club, although they have repeatedly warned they will not be held to ransom.
But Bayern's general manager Uli Hoeness has now hinted that Ballack has decided to quit the club in search of a new challenge.
"I think I know what his decision will be and we will have to be able to live with that decision," said Hoeness.
"His continuous hesitating creates an area for speculation. If he wanted to remain in Munich, wouldn't he have said so by now?"
