Souness on a spy mission
Graeme Souness will be missing when Newcastle United fly out at the crack of dawn for their sunshine break in Marbella tomorrow - so that he can do a bit of scouting.
And The Chronicle can reveal that one of Souness's ports of call will be Berne on Saturday to take in Turkey's World Cup first leg play-off with Switzerland.
Not surprisingly Souness has been told to have a close look at Turkey to see if he can unearth another Emre.
The Chronicle revealed last night that Emre will miss the game in Berne because he is suspended, but he will play in the second leg in Istanbul a week tomorrow before heading straight back to Tyneside for his limited preparations for the game with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on November 19.
So there is every chance that Emre will be sitting in the stands alongside Souness on Saturday as Turkey and Switzerland do battle for a place in next summer's World Cup finals in Germany. You don't have to be a brain surgeon to work out that after being trusted to spend 50m by Freddy Shepherd since he came to St James' Park, Souness will not be one of the major spenders in the January transfer window.
But United have been absolutely delighted with Emre and consider the 3.8m they handed over to Inter Milan in the summer to have been money extremely well spent.
And if Souness can find another Turkish deal like that then Shepherd would probably be ready to do business again.
Although there will not be that much to spend, United are still nevertheless on the look-out for new players . Acting chief scout David Mills was at Anfield last week and took in Liverpool's Champions League game with Anderlecht.
One of the first transfer deals when the window opens on January 1 could involve United's midfielder Amady Faye and it would not be a surprise if he was on the move.
The Senegalese international has never really hacked it at St James' Park and both Wigan and West Ham are aware of his situation and United will let him go if they can recoup the 2m they paid to Portsmouth for him in January.
Faye, Michael Owen, Steven Taylor, Jean Alain Boumsong and Emre will be all missing when the rest of the United first- team squad head off to Spain tomorrow.
In addition at some point in the next week Charles N'Zogbia will be allowed to return home to France to see his family following the death of his father last week.
And it remains to be seen whether skipper Alan Shearer will go to Spain in the next couple of days after undergoing his hernia operation in Germany yesterday.
Flying is not recommended after such an op, but a bit of sunshine on his back and bit of camaraderie with his United colleagues could be just what the doctor ordered for Shearer.
But while Souness says he wants his skipper back for the visit to Stamford Bridge a week on Saturday, I believe a more realistic return target for Shearer is the game at Everton on Sunday, November 27.
