Parreira Still Trusts Dida - For Now
After a few jaw-droppingly bad mistakes between the AC Milan sticks – and the ensuing appalling reviews the player received in various Italian newspapers – Dida is still the seleção first choice goalkeeper as far as Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is concerned...for the moment.
The latest slip-up occurred during the 1-1 draw that Milan ended up handing to Sampdoria after Dida clumsily failed to meet the grade. “I’m not worried by the bad patch that Dida is going through at the moment, but it’s obvious that if things continue like that up until the World Cup....” indicated the Brazilian boss, trailing off with barely hidden meaning.
Parreira remembered that Dida had already gone through a similar wretched patch of teeth-grinding mistakes at Milan before, the recovered his name and prestige under Parreira at Corinthians. This is used by the Coach to justify his continued trust in the Bahian keeper, and Parreira is most definitely a man who relies on the tried-and-tested.
“In a short tournament like the World Cup, experience really counts for a lot. I’ve known Dida since we coincided at Corinthians, and I know exactly how he trains and prepares himself in general. Everybody is subject to ups and downs in their performance, and I’ve seen that Dida is a highly dedicated professional who’ll do all he can to play his best game” added Parreira.
Dida has also received support from his Coach at Milan, Carlo Ancelotti, as well as retired seleção keepers such as Félix, Taffarel and Gilmar Rinaldi. Palmeiras’ Marcos – Felipão’s choice in 2002 – is waiting in the wings as Inter Milan keeper Júlio César still fails to convince Zagallo and Parreira.
With Roberto Carlos and Cafú also going through wobbly phases, jokes have already begun to circulate, saying that the front line ‘Magic Square’ (Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaká and Adriano) is all fine and well, but Brazil also has a ‘Bermuda Triangle’ at the back with the backfiring threesome of Dida, Roberto Carlos and Cafú. Cruel or accurate?
