Homesick Matthaus quits Brazil posting

BERLIN (AFP) - West Germany's 1990 World Cup hero Lothar Matthaus has quit as coach of Brazilian first division side Atletico Paranaense citing personal reasons for his decision.
The 44-year-old Matthaus took over at Paranaense in late January but said he was missing his Hungary-based family and had subsequently tendered his resignation.
"On Friday I informed the club of my decision to step down," Matthaus told Bild daily.
"My coaching spell in Brazil is now over. It is not a sporting decision as my relationship with the fans and the team was good.
"However the language barrier and a different mentality caused problems. My wife Marijana and the children are also in Budapest and I miss them. It is 12 hours away from Brazil and that is too far for regular trips home."
Matthaus, who won a record 150 caps for Germany, has gained a reputation for brief managerial spells since beginning his coaching career with Partizan Belgrade.
The former Bayern Munich star guided the Serbia and Montenegero outfit into the Champions League for the first time in their history and then resigned shortly afterwards in December 2003.
He then took over as Hungarian national coach but decided to quit after the nation failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
After his brief stint at Paranaense Matthaus is back on the market and looking for a new challenge. |
