Former Milan midfielder Albertini retires
Monday December 5, 11:14 PM
MILAN, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Former AC Milan and Italy midfielder Demetrio Albertini announced his retirement as a player on Monday, saying he intended to study to become a coach.
Albertini was part of the successful AC Milan side of the early 1990's, winning five Serie A titles and the 1994 European Cup. He also won 79 caps for Italy.
"After a career like mine I think it is inevitable that I will study to be a coach," said Albertini, who played under Fabio Capello and Arrigo Sacchi at Milan. ADVERTISEMENT
The central midfielder spent the second half of last season with Spanish side Barcelona but made just five league appearances and he has been without a club since.
Livorno coach Roberto Donadoni, a former team-mate of Albertini's at Milan, said on Sunday that he had tried to persuade the 34-year-old to join his club during the close season but that Albertini had clearly decided to end his career.
Albertini made his debut for Milan in January 1989 against Como and was with the club until his move to Atletico Madrid in 2002.
He then had a season with Lazio before moving to Atalanta and then to Barcelona. |
