Newcastle are in negotiations to land Turkish striker Nihat Kahveci according to the player's agent.
With Michael Owen sidelined long-term with a broken metatarsal and Alan Shearer in the last year of his career before retirement, manager Graeme Souness is on the look-out for striking alternatives.
It would now appear that he has turned to Real Sociedad hit-man Nihat - who is also a long-term target for Spartak Moscow.
Whilst Newcastle have yet to concur a fee with Sociedad it would appear that they are to make an offer in the January window, with a £2 million fee mooted.
''We have just started talks with Newcastle,'' Nihat's agent, Ahmet Bulut, told the Sunday Sun.
''They called me to ask about Nihat's situation.
''Spartak want him but his preference is to play in England. Between the two clubs, he would choose Newcastle.
''But Newcastle must find an agreement with Real Sociedad.
