Everton are poised to re-sign former captain Alan Stubbs from Sunderland as a replacement for Fiorentina-bound defender Per Kroldrup.
The return of the 34-year-old is a major surprise after he launched an angry attack on Everton when he failed to secure a new deal in the summer.
He is expected to sign subject to a medical on Friday, despite strong interest from Derby County.
Kroldrup, meanwhile, is in Italy sealing his £3.6m move to Fiorentina.
Stubbs has made 11 appearances for Sunderland in their desperate struggle for Premiership survival after making 142 appearances during his Everton career.
He was involved in a public row with Everton in the summer after he claimed Everton wanted a clause in his next contract cancelling his deal if he had a relapse of his cancer.
Everton denied his claim, saying they would have removed the clause if Stubbs had the all-clear from a specialist.
In a statment issued on behalf of Stubbs at the time, his representatives said he was "extremely hurt" by Everton's attitude.
Now, it appears both sides have agreed to a surprise reconciliation.
