Stubbs says sorry and returns to Everton

LONDON (Reuters) - Defender Alan Stubbs returned to Everton from Sunderland on Friday and apologised for how he handled his departure from his hometown club last July.
The 34-year-old completed his move, on a contract until the end of the season, in time to be available for Saturday's Premier League clash with Arsenal.
It is one of the more surprising moves in the transfer window as Stubbs left on bad terms with manager David Moyes after a disagreement over a new contract in the close-season.
The Liverpool-born defender, a lifetime Everton fan, rejected the one-year deal offered saying at the time he was unhappy with a clause in the contract regarding the recurrence of his testicular cancer.
However, after completing his return on Friday he told the club's Web site it was all a misunderstanding.
"Shortly after I left Everton last summer I made certain accusations which I do now regret due to a basic misunderstanding," he said.
"I now accept that -- as the club said at the time -- they were fully prepared to remove the clause in question upon my being given the all clear by a specialist.
"I appreciate that, at the time, my comments may have caused offence to some people. I can only apologise."
After moving to Goodison Park from Celtic in July 2001, Stubbs made 117 appearances and his total commitment made him a crowd favourite.
He moved to Sunderland on a free transfer but made only a handful of appearances for the Premier League's bottom club.
"I am absolutely thrilled and delighted to be back at the club I have supported all my life -- what happened last summer is now water under the bridge," Stubbs said.
"My target is now a simple one -- I want to prove my worth between now and the end of the season in the hope of securing a contractual extension.
"All I want to do now is play for Everton for as long as possible and to end my playing career at Goodison Park." |
