La Primera Liga Best XI

It's a very adventurous 3-4-3 this week, dictated by a host of spectacular performances on the right and up front. Young Getafe forward Guiza is the player of the week, after scoring two and creating another two against a sorry Espanyol
Goalkeeper
1 Valdes (Barcelona): Was off his line superbly whenever Aloisi managed to beat the offside trap. Also unfurled a few fingertip saves to prevent rock bottom Alaves from catching the leaders with their pants down.
Defenders (right to left)
2 Pablo (Atletico Madrid): Atletico finally managed to hang on to a lead, and snatch a win after what seems like ages. A much improved performance from the Spanish international.
3 Raul Albiol (Valencia): The much touted Ayala successor was at it again, keeping Betis firmly in their place despite some midfield dominance.
4 Pernia (Getafe): Been there, done that! Great defensive work, a spectacular volley for his first goal, and an even better free-kick for his second.
Midfielders (right to left)
5 Guily (Barcelona): Was the best player on the pitch, and set up Larsson for the all-important first with a cross that got the better of the keeper. Was denied twice by the underside of the bar, but came off amidst huge applause, having played second fiddle to Messi for much of the season.
6 Maxi Rodriguez (Atletico Madrid): A great performance floating in from the right, earning Atletico their first League win since October. He loves barging into the box, and made Zaragoza pay for letting him in by scoring one and winning the penalty for the second.
7 David Silva (Celta Vigo): A powerful midfield performance from the up and coming 19 year old. Kept things tight against Malaga at La Rosaleda, and did his bit in attack on a night when Baiano and Cannobio were off colour.
8 Skoubo (Real Sociedad): The young Dane set up both of Nihat's goals, before scoring the goal of the week himself: chesting a Nihat pass with his back to the goal, and volleying it into the top of the net on the turn.
Forwards
9 Guiza (Getafe): Scored with two stunning headers against weary Espanyol, and created two more for his teammates having run the Catalans ragged. A complete performance!
10 Nihat (Real Sociedad): Set the Basque derby alight with two typically swift first half goals, sending the home fans into delirium. A superb pass for Sociedad's third all but secured the points. All but!
11 Aduriz (Athletic Bilbao): The lanky striker replied to Nihat's salvo through a brace of his own to pull Athletic level. Capped it off with an injury time assist to earn Athletic a share of the spoils, and a lot of pride heading home.
Those Who Came Close
David Villa (Valencia): So unlucky to miss out this week, but the quality on display from the trio above made it impossible to fit him in.
Valeron (Deportivo): A majestic first half, scoring the first after superbly controlling a cross from Manuel Pablo on the right, and winning the penalty for Depor's second. But a disappointing second half from him, and his defense, saw Deportivo surrender the two goal lead.
Okubo (Mallorca): Mallorca were dead and buried at the Riazor at half time, but for the Japanese to turn it around with a gutsy performance. Headed in the first to give the islanders some hope, and set up the equalizer for Arango, forcing Deportivo to drop more points at home. Misses out with the team already heavy on attacking talent. |
