Inter patron Massimo Moratti has announced the arrival of Ajax full-back Maxwell and left the door open for Michael Ballack and Valeri Bojinov.
“We have an agreement with Maxwell,” confirmed the former President. “There’s a lot of respect for the man and the player. We’re trying to find a solution that will suit everyone in the future.”
Under the new rules, the Nerazzurri cannot sign another non-EC player unless one of their current crop leaves.
Therefore they are set to register the Brazilian with one of the smaller Serie A sides, such as Ascoli or Empoli, on a loan deal so that he can acclimatise to Italian football. It’s a system already used last season with Julio Cesar spending six months at Chievo.
Coach Roberto Mancini has also commented on the imminent arrival of the former Ajax man who had been heavily linked with Juventus and Milan.
“He is a good player who can cover more than one role on the left flank,” said the tactician. “He has technique and is tactically sound. He is still recovering from a knee injury right now, but has great quality and I had already been tracking him when I was still in charge of Lazio.”
Inter are planning ahead as, after snatching Monaco right-back Maicon’s signature for £4m, they are looking to book another top talent six months early.
“Ballack is a very interesting player. He has class and is one of those men who is able to make the difference in a team,” added Moratti. “Of course, it all depends on Juan Sebastian Veron. I hope he reconsiders and realises how much he is loved here.”
The oil baron has often stated that Ballack is his number one option should Veron go through with his planned move back to Argentina at the end of this season.
The German international’s contract with Bayern Munich is up in the summer, so he could join Inter on a free transfer, although they face competition from Real Madrid and Juventus.
There are more immediate concerns, as Alvaro Recoba’s injury and Obafemi Martins’ African Cup of Nations duty has left Inter with a shortage of strikers. The main candidate is want-away Fiorentina star Bojinov, who is also of interest to Bayern Munich.
“I don’t know what will happen with Bojinov, as I am not informed of how negotiations are going and couldn’t honestly say,” revealed Moratti.
The Viola tried to stem the tide of speculation around the Bulgarian forward, who has been frozen out of the squad since his public demands for a move.
“As I have said many times before, Bojinov is not leaving Fiorentina,” insisted director of sport Pantaleo Corvino. “At the moment, I think it unlikely we’ll make any more transfers before January 31.” |
