Hingis, Dementieva advance to Pan Pacific Open final

TOKYO (AP) -- Martina Hingis defeated top-seeded Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-1 on Saturday to advance to the finals of the Pan Pacific Open with the most impressive victory of her comeback.

Hingis, who entered the tournament as a wild card, relied on solid groundstrokes and a strong serve on her way to a win over the defending champion that took just 1 hour and 6 minutes.

"I played well," said Hingis. "I didn't miss much on key points and I put a lot of pressure on her. I couldn't ask for much more, she's the No. 4 player in the world."

Hingis will play second-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia in Sunday's final. Dementieva beat compatriot and fourth-seeded Anastasia Myskina 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in Saturday's other semifinal.

With a 4-3 lead in the first set, Hingis broke Sharapova to go up 5-3 when her return hit the net and fell in on Sharapova's side. She then had two aces in the final game to take the opening set.

Hingis, who was playing Sharapova for the first time, said Saturday's win was the result of confidence in her game.

"Playing the top players you have to play them over and over," Hingis said. "You have to start believing and step by step I'm getting my confidence back."

With the capacity crowd behind her, Hingis took a 5-1 lead in the second set and broke her opponent in the final game when Sharapova's return went out.

Hingis, who retired three years ago because of foot, heel and ankle injuries, is a four-time winner in Tokyo. She last played in the tournament in 2002.

"It took me three years to recharge my brain and my body and hopefully I can keep playing like this," added Hingis.

Hingis won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open last Sunday after reaching the singles quarterfinals.

Sharapova played well in the first set but lost her focus in the second set.

"She was picking the ball up early," said Sharapova. "She used my pace and the quickness of the court to her advantage and came up with some very good shots."

Sharapova won the first game of the second set and then lost the next six.

"In the second set I could have fought a little harder," said Sharapova. "I didn't have the fighting sprit that I usually have."

Dementieva is 2-2 against Hingis in previous matches and said she is looking forward to facing the Swiss player in the final.

"Martina is a good player and it's exciting to see her back," Dementieva said. "But that doesn't mean I won't be playing and I'll do everthing possible to beat her."

　　本场比赛也是辛吉斯在职业生涯中首次与美少女莎娃交手，比赛中瑞士公主牢牢控制住了全场比赛走势，而莎娃全场竟然没有一次拿到对手发球局中的破发点，而自己却先后被4次破发，堪称完败。

　　比赛一上来由辛吉斯率先发球，而一向进入状态较快的她也很轻松在开局掌握主动，在第2局莎娃的发球局就向对手制造麻烦，利用对手同样二发较弱的机会发起反击，也是一度获得破发点，不过历经两次平分美少女莎娃还是艰难拿下这一分，战成1-1。随后两人互保发球局之后战成4-3，关键的第8局，“战术大师”辛吉斯没有浪费再次拿到手的破发点机会，全场率先破发成功，随后乘势又以6-3结束第一盘。

　　第二盘比赛莎娃的气势大受影响，屡屡在发球局中面临破发点，而辛吉斯则继续在自己的发球局中轻松异常，在再度3次破发成功之后，瑞士公主也以6-1轻松赢得了比赛胜利。

　　赛后的技术统计，辛吉斯原本较弱的发球表现得甚至要比莎娃还要出色，全场发出2个ACE，一发成功率也与对手相当，得分率则以70%比58%领先，而二发得分率更是出现了73%比33%的巨大优势，显见玛蒂娜在把握战机的能力表现得更胜一筹，而最终她也以10次破发机会成功拿下4个的优异表现向全世界的球迷交出了令人满意的成绩单。

TOKYO (AP) -- Martina Hingis missed a chance for her first title in her comeback, falling 6-2, 6-0 to Russia's Elena Dementieva on Sunday in the Pan Pacific Open.

The second-seeded Dementieva overpowered Hingis in the championship match at Tokyo's Metropolitan Gymnasium to win her first Tier 1 WTA Tour singles title.

Hingis, who retired three years ago because of foot, heal and ankle injuries, is a four-time winner in Tokyo. She last played in the tournament in 2002.

"I've exceeded my own expectations and am happy to playing good tennis once again," Hingis said. "I've got a couple of things I have to work on and I'll go where this takes me."

In her comeback attempt, Hingis won her first mixed doubles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open after reaching the singles quarterfinals.

Hingis, who entered the tournament as a wild card, beat top-seeded Maria Sharapova in the semifinals Saturday, but got off to a sluggish start in the final and never found her game against the ninth-ranked Dementieva.

"I've been playing well for the last five or six weeks," Hingis said. "I guess I just faced one Russian too many."

Hingis was broken three times in the first set and had a series of unforced errors.

The Swiss star had no answer for Dementieva's powerful serves and returns. When Hingis came to the net, the Russian player frustrated her with lobs that Hingis had no chance of reaching.

"I love to do passing shots," Dementieva said. "When she started to come to the net I could see she didn't like my groundstrokes and was trying to change the pace. I was able to use those lobs effectively.

"I'm happy to have played such a good game in the final. I played very solid today and I hope this will give me confidence for the rest of the season."

Hingis said she will play in Dubai later this month and next month in Doha, but declined to go into detail about her long-term plans.

"I'll play in Dubai and Doha and we'll take it from there," Hingis said. "I just want to pace myself and see how my body copes with it."
