It's Off Hugo As Viana Joins Valencia
NEWCASTLE United have agreed for midfielder Hugo Viana to join Valencia on a permanent basis.
The 23-year-old joined the Magpies from Sporting Lisbon in June 2002, but never fully got to grips with the demands of English football, making 27 starts and a further 33 substitute outings, and scoring four goals.
He spent last season back at Lisbon on loan, before another temporary move took him to Valencia at the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign. The La Liga club have now exercised their right to turn that deal into a permanent one for the Portuguese international.
However, as Newcastle United's Chief Operating Officer Russell Cushing told nufc.co.uk: "Suggestions of a £7m loss are wildly inaccurate.
"There is a significant up front cash payment for the club, with a share in future profits if Valencia sell the player in the future."
Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd, meanwhile, said the eyecatching displays of Charles N'Zogbia and Emre meant Newcastle remained more than happy with the high quality of left-sided midfield options still at the club's disposal.
He told nufc.co.uk: "Emre is a Turkish international with great pedigree and it has not taken him long to establish himself as a favourite with our fans after his move from Inter Milan.
"And the development of young Charles N'Zogbia as an attacking and goalscoring midfielder in the Premiership has also excited the crowd.
"Both are left-sided midfielders and we are delighted with how they are doing. Valencia have exercised their right to turn Hugo's loan move into a permanent one, and we wish him well for the future."
French starlet N'Zogbia's tally of five goals this season is bettered only by Alan Shearer and Michael Owen for the Magpies, while Emre guaranteed himself instant hero status at Gallowgate when scoring the winner in the 3-2 Tyne-Wear derby victory over Sunderland back in October.
