The Milan derby is one of the biggest events in world football and with Milan and Inter battling for second place, this promises to be one of the most exciting yet. Just two points currently separate the sides with the Diavolo holding the advantage in the battle for automatic Champions League qualification. A win for the red half of the city would greatly increase that advantage, but the Nerazzurri will be hoping to leapfrog their rivals in this match.
Milan are on top form in time for this huge game as they continue to put pressure on Juventus. Seven points might seem like a big margin to make up in five matches but with Juve’s form slipping anything is possible. With the exception of their shock defeat to Lecce, when they paid the price for resting virtually their entire first team, the Rossoneri have scored 11 goals in their last three games and the Giallorossi were the first side to beat them in three months. The Diavolo’s record of 102 goals this season in all competitions shows they are still very much a force to be reckoned with despite the heavy criticism they have received.
Inter – who are still in shock after the disgusting events of last Sunday morning when some of their players were attacked by angry fans at Malpensa airport for their Champions League exit – have spent most of their campaign in third place, patiently waiting for their chance to pounce. This could finally be their opportunity to overtake their hated rivals and snatch second spot from under their noses.
The Nerazzurri are also on good form after winning four of their last five fixtures and will be full of confidence going into this historic encounter after winning the first of this season’s derbies. They came away from that game as 3-2 winners thanks to Adriano’s late strike but with the Brazilian still struggling for form they may need to find a new hero this time around. Julio Cruz is suspended following his sending off against Ascoli, while both Juan Veron and Jose Ze Maria are both injured.
