Carlo Mazzone has tended his resignation as Coach of Livorno following their seventh straight defeat, but the club is yet to respond.
“I feel like handing in my resignation,” said the veteran tactician after the 3-1 loss at Lazio. “My worry is that it would seem like I was abandoning the players in a moment of great difficulty, as they showed me so much respect in these weeks together.”
Livorno President Aldo Spinelli effectively forced Roberto Donadoni into quitting his post when they were in fifth place, but Mazzone’s tenure has been a disaster with six points in 11 games during which the Amaranto slipped down to ninth position.
This seventh consecutive defeat sets a new club record in Serie A, beating the tally of six achieved in both 1930-31 and 1948-49.
“If after seven straight losses a Coach does not get fired, then I think he should walk away,” added the 68-year-old. “We’ll evaluate the situation along with the President.”
If his resignation is accepted, it’ll be a sad end to Mazzone’s career, but at least he does so on the day he sets a new record with his 788th Serie A match, improving upon the legendary Nereo Rocco.
President Spinelli confessed last week that he “regretted” bringing in the former Bologna boss, but that the Coach was “the last person to blame” for their recent crisis. |
