Dowie backs Boothroyd after play-off melee
Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie 'will be disappointed' should Watford counterpart Adrian Boothroyd be banned from the touchline for the Coca-Cola Championship play-off final.
A 0-0 draw in the semi-final, second leg gave Watford a 3-0 aggregate victory. But the match will be remembered for the second-half skirmish which involved players, managers, and backroom staff from both teams.
Boothroyd, who clashed with Fitz Hall as the Palace defender tried to retrieve the ball to take a throw-in, sought to play down the incident which could mean he has to watch the final against former club Leeds from the stands.
Dowie said: 'Our players did not show enough discipline and we regret that. But those sorts of things used to be part of the fun of the game.
'Players stamp and kick each other in rugby and they call it a gentleman's game. I would be disappointed if Adrian were in the stands for the final.
'That many of the players joined the brawl shows togetherness in our squad. I don't want the incident to overshadow Watford's achievement.'
