Giovanni Trapattoni has been reunited with former Inter hero Lothar Matthaus as both have been hired by Austrian club Salzburg.
Former Italy boss Trap is the new Coach, while Matthaus will be the director general for the 2006-07 campaign.
“I have come to Salzburg to make something great happen,” he told the club’s official website after the surprise announcement.
The 67-year-old was unemployed since he was fired by German outfit VfB Stuttgart in February and continues his globe-trotting career after spells in Serie A and the Bundesliga.
“He is one of the great gentlemen of world football and despite his 67 years, he still has the enthusiasm of a 14-year-old when he’s talking about football,” explained Salzburg patron Dietrich Mateschitz.
Matthaus was one of the star players during Trapattoni’s record-breaking Scudetto season at Inter in 1988-89.
“I am particularly looking forward to the collaboration with Giovanni,” said the 45-year-old ex-midfielder. “He was one of the best Coaches I ever had as a player and I’m proud to be part of the Salzburg project.”
Matthaus has also worked as a tactician at Rapid Vienna, Partizan Belgrade and the Hungarian national team, but is moving behind a desk for this post. |
