Milan have announced that Andriy Shevchenko will leave the Italian giants before the start of next season.
The two parties held talks at the outfit’s Via Turati headquarters this afternoon after the player recently admitted that he was pondering an exit.
Milan official Adriano Galliani attempted to convince the former European Footballer of the Year to remain but without success.
“I’m leaving for family reasons,” stated the Chelsea target. “I want to thank the club for what they have done for me.
“I would like to point out that there were no problems in our relationship and this isn’t about money.”
“I am sorry, as I saw the look in the eyes of the fans and the many messages that have come in. My wife has nothing to do with this, as we made the decision together for the good of my family.”
Shevchenko’s wife, American model Kristen Pazik, is thought to be the reason behind this switch to London.
“I don’t speak English, my wife does not speak Ukrainian, so the only language we have in common right now is Italian. The only way to make our children understand how much we love them is through the English language.”
There was tension outside the club headquarters following the announcement, but above all a sense of sadness.
“I thank the club for having listened to me, in particular Galliani and Silvio Berlusconi. This is an important decision for my life. It’s impossible to find another club like Milan, so this choice is purely a family matter. I could never hope to work for a better side.”
Galliani added: “It was a victory for the English language over the Italian one. I did all that I could do to convince him to stay.
“This is the most difficult separation since I have been at Milan.”
Shevchenko is now expected to join the Premiership champions, even if Galliani insists there is still some way to go before anything is agreed.
“We will now start negotiations with Chelsea, but they won’t be easy,” concluded the Rossoneri Vice-President.
