Govou comes in for Cisse
France have drafted Sidney Govou into their World Cup squad to replace the stricken Djibril Cisse.
Liverpool striker Cisse suffered a horrific broken leg during France's 3-1 friendly win over China on Wednesday evening.
With his World Cup dream in tatters, Cisse's place in France's 23-man party was up for grabs, with a string of names mooted.
The likes of Nicolas Anelka and Ludovic Giuly were suggested as replacements, along with Under-21 duo Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec.
But national team coach Raymond Domenech has opted for the versatility of Govou, who can play up front or on the wing.
Govou, who has expressed a desire to quit French champions Lyon, will link up with his international colleagues on Thursday before flying out to Germany.
He has made 19 appearances for Les Bleus, with his last cap coming in the November friendly against Costa Rica.
France start their World Cup campaign against Switzerland next Tuesday before tackling South Korea and Togo.
Govou will now compete with the likes of David Trezeguet and Louis Saha to start alongside Thierry Henry against the Swiss in Stuttgart. |
