Bovo furious at Roma snub
Saturday 24 June, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cesare Bovo has returned to Palermo after Roma lost a blind auction and the defender admits he’s disappointed with the result.
“I grew up in the Giallorossi youth system and am a lifelong fan of this club. I admit, I was hit hard by this,” commented the Under-21 international.
The two clubs both owned 50 per cent of his contract and he spent last season at the Stadio Olimpico, but they were unable to negotiate a deal for his future.
When these situations are stalled, the sides put a figure into a sealed envelope and the highest bid wins, which in this case was Palermo.
“I thought it was going to go differently, especially as during the year I had been told that Roma wanted to keep me. I haven’t spoken to Luciano Spalletti. I don’t know if losing this auction was organised between the Coach and the club, but it’s pointless wondering about it now.”
The 26-year-old defender made his Serie A debut with Roma in 2001-02, then spent two seasons on loan at Lecce and another at Parma’s Stadio Tardini. This’ll be the first campaign he’ll play with Palermo.
“I am disappointed because during the year there is so much talk, but when Roma had to back that up with facts, they were found wanting. I don’t want to criticise the club, but I really was left with a bad taste in my mouth. Nonetheless, playing for Roma remains a highlight for me, a true Romanista, and I cannot explain what that means to me.”
A series of blind auctions were held this week to finalise the co-ownership deals that could not be sorted out through negotiation. Sergio Almiron – an Inter transfer target – stays at Empoli despite Udinese’s offer, while the Friuli outfit also lost out on Lazio’s Goran Pandev.
Messina took Gaetano D’Agostino from Roma and Sergio Floccari from Atalanta, while Ivica Iliev returns to Sicily after a spell at Genoa.
Torino have secured the services of Nikola Lazetic, who moved from Livorno in January, and Roberto Stellone from Genoa.
Cagliari wide man Massimo Gobbi’s contract was won by Treviso, but he is expected to be sold back into Serie A in the direction of Fiorentina.
The Viola have released Luis Jimenez towards Ternana and Cristian Brocchi to Milan.
