Kezman poised to switch from Atletico to Fenerbahce
MADRID, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Serbia striker Mateja Kezman is poised to leave Atletico Madrid and sign for Fenerbahce, the Primera Liga side said on Saturday.
'Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahce have reached an initial agreement for the transfer of Mateja Kezman,' Atletico said on their Web site.
Atletico said that the move was conditional on the reception of payment guarantees from the Turkish club, adding that they expected the deal to be closed on Monday.
The 27-year-old, who has been dropped from the national side after performing poorly at the World Cup, joined Atletico from Chelsea in June 2005 for a reported 9 million euros ($11.50 million) after struggling to earn a first team spot at the London club.
A prolific scorer while at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 105 times in 123 games, Kezman notched up only four goals in his one season at Chelsea.
He also failed to live up to his billing at Atletico, scoring eight goals in 30 Primera Liga appearances and missing the end of the season because of a knee injury.
The close-season arrivals of Argentine forward Sergio Aguero and Spanish striker Mista pushed him down the pecking order at the club and helped prompt his decision to accept the move to Turkey.
Atletico have said that they are trying to sign Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes and Portugal midfielder Maniche from Dynamo Moscow before the transfer deadline expires next Thursday.
They open their Primera Liga campaign at Racing Santander on Sunday. |
