Manchester United defender Jonathan Spector has completed a £500,000 transfer to West Ham.

The 20-year-old has become Alan Pardew's second signing of the summer window and follows hot on the heels of the capture of Lee Bowyer from Newcastle.

Big things were expected of Spector when he first burst onto the scene at Old Trafford but, after being loaned out to Charlton last season, Sir Alex Ferguson has decided to move on the versatile USA international.

Spector made just two Premiership starts for United and West Ham manager Alan Pardew was only too happy to offer Spector an escape route from Old Trafford.

"Jonathan is a player we have been tracking for the past 18 months or so," Pardew told West Ham's official website. "He has huge potential and we hope that bears fruition here at West Ham United.

"He is definitely one for the future and, with a Uefa Cup campaign to look forward to next season, he will add to our defensive quality.

"He can play all along the back four and, over the next 12 months, we hope he will secure a first team place here and prove his worth as a Premiership player."

Freshly returned from a close-season vacation to Cancun, Mexico, Liverpool defender Zak Whitbread is plotting the course for his future after finishing the past campaign with relegated Millwall.

"I've got a lot to think about over the summer," the former US youth international told YA Thursday. "At this stage in my career, sitting back in the reserves at Liverpool is not something I want to do, so [Liverpool and I] are going to have some decisions to make."

"There are going to be new faces at the Liverpool, and as you know with a club of this size it is hard to be a first team player, so if I am not going to have a chance to be a part of that then it might be time to find a new club."

"There have been a few clubs with interest and there are options to me this summer," Whitbread claimed. "Nothing has been decided yet and I am going to have to sit down with [Liverpool head coach Rafael] Benitez at some point to decide what my future is at the club."

Whitbread, 22, made 25 starts for the Lions after joining on a midseason loan from the Reds, an experience which the American says was a positive one.

"Playing most the season at Millwall, though relegation was disappointing, helped me mature as a player and showed me what it was like to be a part of a first team and professional league."

"For every player, knowing that you're going to be playing every Saturday is what it is all about and I am looking to continue that next season - wherever that may be."

Whitbread is due to report to Liverpool for preseason training on Independence Day.

WHITBREAD JOINS MILLWALL

Zak Whitbread has completed a permanent move to League One side Millwall after a successful loan spell at the New Den last season.
The American born centre half made six appearances for Liverpool's first team and was a regular during the Carling Cup run in 2004, when he helped the team to memorable victories over Millwall, Middlesbrough and Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Liverpool midfielder and Lions boss Nigel Spackman swooped to make the move permanent, and Whitbread has signed a two-year deal with the London club as they aim to bounce back to the Championship following relegation last season.
