The FIFA World Cup™ could reach the milestone of its 2000th goal today.
The penalty that Fernando Torres struck home to give Spain a 3-1 victory over Tunisia in Stuttgart last night was goal number 1,991.
The 1,000th goal was scored by Rob Rensenbrink for Netherlands in a 3-2 defeat against Scotland at Argentina 1978 and the 1,900th goal was claimed by Christian Vieri in Italy’s 2-1 golden-goal defeat by Korea Republic on 18 June 2002 in Daejeon.
Illustrious names scoring milestone goals include Gerd Muller (800th – for West Germany in their 5-2 defeat of Bulgaria at Mexico 1970), Jean-Pierre Papin (1,200th – for France in a 1-0 defeat of Canada at Mexico 1986) and Gary Lineker (1,300th – for England in their 3-0 defeat of Paraguay also at Mexico 1986).
With 75 goals in the 32 games so far, this competition shows an average of 2.34 goals per game. The total number of 1991 goals have been scored in 676 games, producing an FIFA World Cup average from 1930 to the present day of 2.94 goals per game. |
