Ex-Rams boss George Burley believes the injury to his skipper after five minutes put Southampton on the back foot in the first half of Sunday's 2-2 draw at Pride Park.

"Having Claus Lundekvam carried off after five minutes was a real blow, but I thought after the break we played some quality football," said the Saints manager. "It was certainly a better performance by us that the first 45.

"We have a lot of new faces and it takes time to build a team, but in the second half we got forward quicker."

Of his 17-year-old left-back Gareth Bale, who scored a cracking free-kick to equalise Seth Johnson's opener for the Rams, George said: "Gareth is still learning the game. It was a big test today against Tommny Smith, but, as you saw, he's a bit useful from free-kicks!"

Luke Chadwick and Peter Sweeney were rushed to hospital as City went down by a single goal at Roots Hall.

Freddy Eastwood's penalty in the 13th minute ensured the points stayed in Essex on the opening day of the season, but boss Tony Pulis was left with fitness concerns over his wing men.

Sweeney suffered what appeared to be a broken wrist, while Chadwick was stretched off with an oxygen mask strapped to his face as the Southend heat got the better of him.

Both are now major doubts for next week's local derby clashes at home to Derby County and Birmingham.

"Luke collapsed on the pitch unconscious and had to be rushed to hospital," confirmed Pulis.

"The doctors and physios brought him round, but he dropped back under again so we are very concerned about that.

"Peter went with him as well because his wrist is in a bad way.

"We are a little bit concerned about those two especially ahead of Tuesday where it looks like we will be a little bit short now."

Despite starting the game well, City were soon on the back foot when Eastwood converted from the spot.

"We are disappointed we have got beat because we have given a silly goal away," added Pulis.

"I thought we started brightly and their keeper has had to make a couple of good saves from Sweeney and Vincent, but in the end we have given them a goal head start.

"We have had two or three good chances to score today so I'm disappointed to come away with nothing."

City boss Tony Pulis has been able to deliver an encouraging report on Luke Chadwick nearly 24 hours after the winger was stretchered off at Southend.

The Potters star, pictured below, was taken to a local hospital as a precaution but is now recovering well after his condition was put down to dehydration.

Says the manager: "The hospital examined him and checked everything out and they have told us what happened  was due to dehydration more than anything else. We are just very pleased and very relieved he's okay.
"

Chadwick left the field at Roots Hall after an hour on a stretcher and with an oxygen mask on his face. It was later confirmed he had also lost consciousness but is now in the process of making a full recovery.

BRYAN Robson is adamant Chris Perry is set to become
Albion's very own 'Mr Reliable' after an impressive debut in Saturday's 2-0 win over HullCity.

The summer Bosman signing looked at home at the heart of the Baggies defence alongside new skipper Curtis Davies.

And Robson reckons Perry, who is playing outside the top-flight for the first time in his 13-year career, offers a firm foundation to build Albion's Championship challenge on.

"You know what Chris Perry is all about," the Albion chief insisted.

"I think I can more or less guarantee every week I can put a seven down next to his name before we even kick-off and that's exactly what I'll get.

"There are no fours or nines but all sevens.

"That's exactly what I want - a good solid base that you can work from.

"The five lads in the defence give us that because Albrechtsen has been playing well in pre-season as well.

"He was unfortunate that Robinson and Watson got the nod over him on Saturday."
